Sunderland goalkeeper Lee Camp is taking a battering, after he put in another shaky performance against Sheffield Wednesday.

Sunderland were beaten 3-1 by Wednesday at the weekend, as they failed to build on their victory over Derby County.

The Black Cats’ relegation fears have been heightened by their latest defeat, and Camp hardly covered himself in glory during the contest.

The January signing did not look comfortable throughout, and was partly at fault for at least one of the goals which Sunderland conceded.

And Black Cats fans were in an unforgiving mood on social media website Twitter after the match.

Lee Camp is a waste of time, shocking keeper #safc

Said a few weeks back that Steele was the worst keeper I'd ever seen in a Sunderland shirt. Lee Camp, "Hold my beer". #safc #Down

Chris Coleman defends Camp

Sunderland manager Chris Coleman insists Cardiff loanee goalkeeper Lee Camp was not to blame for yesterday’s 3-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

The 33-year-old’s performance again came under scrutiny as the Owls capitalised on some poor defending to score three times.

While the Cardiff goalkeeper has made some impressive saves in his loan spell for Sunderland, his ability at dealing with crosses has been called into question by many of the Wearside faithful.

But former Wales boss Coleman was quick to defend to the keeper he signed in the January transfer window:

It’s the difference in mentality between believing that a team can put the ball into the box as many times as they like and they won’t score, and on the other hand when you are a bit fragile and you have been hit on the head for so long, every time the ball comes into the box there is that vulnerability.
Sometimes we don’t help him (Camp). Certain things we do, we invite pressure. Looking at the defeat, I couldn’t say it was his fault today.
We should have done better in other areas to stop the ball arriving before it did.
