Bennett opens up on the impact of criticism from Leroy Sane tackle and says former club Aston Villa will be feeling the pressure

Joe Bennett has revealed that the criticism he received following his challenge on Leroy Sane did affect him.
The full-back came under scathing criticism for his challenge on Manchester City winger Leroy Sane during an FA Cup clash in January.
Bennett wasn’t sent off for the foul, but he was later sent off for a second yellow card following another poor challenge, this time on youngster Brahim Diaz.
Following the challenge, Sane was sidelined for a number of weeks and supporters from Manchester City and around the country were quick to voice their opinion.
Bennett was threatened and called every name under the sun on social media in the weeks that followed and he admits that it did affect him.
“A little bit. It was more because of the magnitude of the team we played. Any other team and it wouldn’t have been on TV. The fact that it was on TV and everyone seen it, it was blown out of proportion.
“I did catch him but I didn’t mean to. I think I’ve had one other red card in my career. I’m not the sort of player to go out and hurt someone. I meant to bring him down but not to hurt him and I apologised, hopefully he seen it.
“I think that’s all forgotten about now. At the time I was disappointed and upset. I managed to get my place back. Armand came in and that’s good competition but I feel I’ve been playing alright, and the manager has put his faith in me.”
Following Bennett’s sending off during the defeat to the Premier League leaders, manager Neil Warnock said he would make the defender train while the rest of the players were in Leeds,
The Yorkshireman claimed Bennett must have wanted to get out of a trip to Leeds by getting sent off so as punishment, he would still have to train on his own, and he wasn’t joking. Bennett revealed: “He did.
“I was in every day that the lads were off, all week. I didn’t mind. It’s something that I had to do. A bit of discipline and it’s all forgotten about now and I’m moving on.”
With the drama of the FA Cup tie behind him, it’s now about promotion to the Premier League for Joe Bennett and his Cardiff City team mates.
The Bluebirds are now seven points clear of Fulham and Aston Villa with nine games remaining and the pressure will be on in those final games.
However, former Villa player Bennett believes the pressure will be firmly on the Midlands club and not the Bluebirds, and he speaks from experience.
“There’s been pressure all season and it’s no different now. The pressure is probably on Villa and Fulham to be fair. We’ve got the points on the board and they haven’t. They are massive clubs and they are expected to be up there. We have to just concentrate on what we’re doing.
“When I was there the fans expected to win every game and that’s no different now. They expect to get promoted, top two, and the pressure is on them.”
Promotion maybe sitting tantalisingly close for the Bluebirds given their position with time on their side, but they’re not taking their eye off the ball.
Having said that, Neil Warnock and his players do realise the size of their achievement to reach this stage of the season in their position, especially with the inferior squad many believe them to have.
But this season won’t count for much if they don’t finish the job and for Bennett, who has played in the Premier League before with Middlesbrough and Aston Villa, he’s desperate to reach the top-level to prove what he can do.
“I only played 30/40 games in the Premier League but they were tough games and I know what they are liked. Going back there, I’ve improved as a player.
“I’ve played a lot of games in the Championship now and I’m quite experienced but it would be massive if I could get back there and show people what I can do.
“I think we can be proud of what we achieved this season with the manager not spending too much money.
“The spine of the team has been the same. We just need to focus now. Keep doing what we’ve been doing and grind out results.”
