“It’s no fluke” says Burton Albion boss Nigel Clough as he piles praise on Neil Warnock ahead of Friday’s clash with the Bluebirds

Burton Albion boss Nigel Clough has been talking up Neil Warnock ahead of his team’s clash with Cardiff City on Friday.

Both sides head into the game needing all three points but for very different reasons with the Bluebirds closing in on automatic promotion, and the Brewers gasping for air in the relegation zone.

Nigel Clough has a tough job on his hands to steer Burton clear of the drop with three points currently sitting between them and safety.

And every game counts, even ones like Friday when Burton take on Championship promotion hopefuls Cardiff City.

But there has been no fighting talk from the Burton boss. He’s a big admirer of Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock and he’s not hiding it.

Speaking today to the Burton Mail, Clough backed up Cardiff’s promotion push and the ability of Neil Warnock to sustain such a challenge at the top. He said: “I think that’s where Neil has vast experience in that department,”

“I remember reading towards the end of last season when he said that it won’t take much in the summer to get Cardiff challenging for promotion.

“And he’s right – they’ve brought a few players in, as he does, some come off, some don’t.

“But they are right there in prime position to get automatic promotion.”

Cardiff have been written off by many this season, even after making second place their own for much of the campaign.

And the ability on paper of the Bluebirds’ squad in comparison to the likes of Aston Villa and Fulham may cause some to cite luck as a factor.

However, Nigel Clough rejects that suggestion with the knowledge of who Cardiff have in charge. He added: “He (Warnock) does it an awful lot of times, it’s no fluke with his promotion record.

“It is incredible. They are up there and they look as though they are going to be back in the Premier League.”
