NEIL WARNOCK: INJURY UPDATE

Team News

Aron Gunnarsson could be in line to return for the first time since limping off in the 1-0 win over Barnsley in November at Oakwell. Kenneth Zohore will be expected to lead the line for Warnock’s men after hitting some fine form of late.

Burton Albion have a fully fit squad for the trip to the Welsh Capital. Marvin Sordell should line the line for Clough’s side.

Jazz has had a setback, the bone has healed but he’s got a plate in there and the fracture underneath has been caused by the plate. The surgeon saw him and decided he’s now got to have the plate out, so he’ll be out for another two or three weeks, which is a real blow for the lad.

Connolly should be OK if needed this weekend.

Joe Ralls is doing really well, so we’ll see how these games go. I wouldn’t want to risk him before next weekend if I could help it so we’ll see what’s what.

About Burton Albion

Burton Albion Football Club is a professional association football club based in the town of Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, England. The team play in the Championship, the second tier of English football. Burton Albion competed in the non-League of English football from their formation in 1950 until 2009, when they were promoted to the Football League.

The club's home ground is the Pirelli Stadium, having moved from Eton Park in 2005, and their nickname is The Brewers, stemming from the town's brewing heritage dating back hundreds of years.

During the 2014–15 season, manager Gary Rowett left to join Birmingham City, and was replaced by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Under Hasselbaink the Brewers won League Two and were promoted to League One for the first time in their history. Hasselbaink left by mutual consent in December 2015 to join Queens Park Rangers as manager. Clough returned to Burton to replace him for his second spell as manager and led the club to a second-place finish in the league, earning promotion to the Championship, another first for Burton. The Brewers opened their first season in the Championship in spectacular fashion losing away to local rivals Nottingham Forest 4–3. Burton went on a 6 match streak without losing between 18 February and 18 March beginning with a 2–1 win at home to ex-Premier League opponents; Norwich City and culminating in a 3–5 defeat to Brentford and including a 1–0 win over Nottingham Forest in the reverse fixture. Burton secured their Championship status on 29 April 2017 after a 1–1 draw with Barnsley.

Why international break could help Burton Albion avoid Cardiff City backlash after Derby County postponement

Burton Mail

Sunday 25th March 2018

Burton Albion will hope there is no backlash following Cardiff City's postponement at Derby County last weekend when they visit the Bluebirds on Friday.

And Nigel Clough believes the 12-day break between the two fixtures could help ease the chance of his side suffering a reaction from Neil Warnock's men as they look to take another step towards the Premier League.

Second-placed Cardiff were set to take on the Rams at Pride Park on March 18, only for the game to be called off on the morning of the game following heavy snow in the area the night before.

Ex-Albion boss Warnock called the decision "scandalous" and made his frustrations at the outcome clear in an interview with Sky Sports News, although the EFL have since confirmed that they were satisfied the right decision was made.

That fixture has been rearranged for April 24, meaning Cardiff's next chance to make it eight successive League wins will come against the Brewers at the Cardiff City Stadium this week.

So how is Clough feeling about that prospect?

NIGEL CLOUGH:

"I hope he has calmed down, Neil, when we go there next Friday because he looked a bit animated and agitated on the Sunday morning!" joked the Burton manager.

"I think when you prepare and everything, you just want to play the game.

"That's what he'll be saying to the players.

"I think if it was three or four days, it would be more of a problem (for the Brewers).

"But I think it's more difficult to keep that sort of feeling over a two-week period, to say, 'right, take it out on our next opponents'.

"Hopefully the feeling and emotions of the injustice will have eased a little bit by then."

" Burton will be raring to go "

That’s the warning from boss Nigel Clough, who says his side will be refreshed from the rest brought on by the current international break.

NIGEL CLOUGH:

“The players have (had) some time off this week.
“If we’d have trained, I don’t think we’d have had six or eight training, so it gives the injured players time.
“Marvin Sordell had a bang on the head and Kyle McFadzean got a kick on his calf, so it’s unusual to get that many, especially so early in the game.
“We’re hoping that this break will give them time, and we’ll have just about everybody available for the run-in.”

Was thinking it's a shame the club didn't do a special offer - buy a wolves ticket and get Burton home match ticket with 15% off or something. Or vice versa!

Every game worries me, on paper should be a win, but we are usually not at our best after an international break, fingers crossed and we carry on as before with another win.

I wonder if Warnock will leave out as many of the international traveling players as he can, until Monday?

That way he can work with as many as possible all week, and save some of the more tired players for Monday?

Massive game for us certainly after an international break as we tend to take a while to adjust to a break, Burton will be firing out the blocks because they want to avoid dreaded relegation, scrappy 2-1 win for us but we need to be at our absolute best.

Cardiff promotion challeng is 'no fluke'

Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock is set to face the media later this morning ahead of his side’s clash with Burton Albion tomorrow, and his opposite number Nigel Clough has already had his say on the prospect of facing the Yorkshireman’s team.

When City edged past the Brewers on the opening day of the season, few onlookers must have expected the incredible campaign that has since followed, but Clough insists he isn’t surprised by Cardiff’s progress.

“I remember reading towards the end of last season when he said that it won’t take much in the summer to get Cardiff challenging for promotion.
“And he’s right - they’ve brought a few players in, as he does, some come off, some don’t.
“But they are right there in prime position to get automatic promotion.
“He does it an awful lot of times, it’s no fluke with his promotion record.
“It is incredible. They are up there and they look as though they are going to be back in the Premier League.”
Nigel Clough

Cardiff City will be hoping to make it eight wins on the spin when hosting strugglers Burton Albion on good Friday in the Welsh Capital.

The Bluebirds have been in red-hot form of late and have won seven games on the bounce. However, their last encounter against play-off hopefuls Derby County before the international break was controversially called-off.

It has caused owner Vincent Tan to reimburse the traveling supporters the cost of their tickets. They will be hoping to now keep up their momentum after the international break against the Brewers.

Nigel Clough’s side have struggled to get going this season. And with just eight games to spare, they are placed 23rd in the Sky Bet Championship table – however, they’re just three points adrift of 21st placed Barnsley and staying in the Championship is definitely achievable.
