Gunnarsson update

Aron Gunnarsson played 45 minutes for Iceland on Saturday as they fell to a 3-0 defeat against Mexico.

But the midfield enforcer won’t feature for his country versus Peru on Wednesday... he’s returning to train with Cardiff City and work on his fitness instead. :thumbright: :bluebird:

Cardiff City star Aron Gunnarsson ready for Bluebirds return against Burton as Neil Warnock's aces eye Premier League -

Sunday 25th March 2018

Aron Gunnarsson is poised to give promotion-chasing Cardiff City a massive fillip by returning to action in Bluebirds colours for the first time in four months.

The Cardiff fans' favourite will be involved in Friday's home clash with Burton provided he has no reaction to making his comeback for Iceland against Mexico.

Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock was happy for Iceland's skipper to play in the friendly international in California to build up his match fitness. Iceland also play Peru in New York on Tuesday, but Gunnarsson may miss that and fly back to South Wales to prepare for Burton.

The blockbusting midfielder has not played a Cardiff match since limping off with an ankle injury duding the 1-0 November win at Barnsley.

He was due to return as a substitute in the game against Derby, before that was called off amidst the snow furore.

Gunnarsson could find himself coming on in the second-half against Burton this week, before starting the Easter Monday clash with Sheffield United at Brammal Lane.

The drive and leadership Gunnarsson will bring will be welcomed back like the arrival of a multi-million pound signing at this pivotal stage of the season.

Cardiff have their Premier League fate in their own hands, although there are some demanding fixtures looming.

However, a midfield triumvirate of Gunnarsson, Marko Grujic and Callum Paterson will offer physicality, presence and goal threat from the engine room in closing eight matches of the Championship campaign.

When fit, Gunnarsson has been one of the first picks for Warnock, having strangely been overlooked by his Cardiff predecessor Paul Trollope.

All our remaining games are important with the next one the most important. We should all have that embedded in our minds until after the last game.

I hope we don't leave it like last season this next game.

Having thought we could get by without him when you read out those three names it sounds really impressive and could be the key in getting us over the line

Never been a Gunnar cheerleader but some of the talk of we don't need him is madness (other threads). He is a leader, a top end championship (genuine) CM and importantly has been through this before.
IMO, behind Ralls, Grujic & Paterson as starters, but we are not sure if Joe is fit and lets be realistic there are a lot of games for all teams in a short period. Damour & Bryson are better at the head of the midfield, but Paterson has that position nailed down.

Gunnar will be massive for us !!

Great news. We've done brilliantly in his absence but I still think we've missed him. His availability will make a significant difference in the run in.

He might not start every game he might be rusty but he will step up to it and is a massive plus.

I don't think Ralls will be fit for a good while and a midfield of Grujic,Paterson and Gunnars looks well balanced, even allowing Marko to move forward more, a role he's more comfortable playing.

Got to agree, his match fitness might be a worry but internationals would have some him good. Those three in middle will take no prisoners.

Totally agree! Ralls probably won't be back immediately so he'll be very welcome. A trio of Grujic, Gunnar and Paterson sounds great to me and even when Ralls is back four in midfield might be really useful for key matches. With Grujic, Gunnar, Ralls and Paterson I think we have a midfield as good as anything in the division.

You are right in that with so many games in such a short space of time we will need them all. we can make small changes each game, as we now have so many good reliable midfield players !!!

Cardiff City still have a number of players away on international duty, but manager Neil Warnock will be working hard with those who have stayed in South Wales.

The Bluebirds are gearing up for their big clash with Nigel Clough's struggling Burton Albion on Good Friday. A win would be another momentous step towards Championship promotion.

Meanwhile, Callum Paterson, Armand Traore and Marko Grujic are all in involved in international friendlies on Tuesday night, while Neil Etheridge faces a crucial Asian Cup qualifier for his beloved Philippines.

The Gunnarsson debate

It was great to see Aron Gunnarsson feature for Iceland the other day, making his long-awaited return from an ankle injury.

And the news that he could be in contention for the Cardiff team to face Burton Albion has triggered a debate among Bluebirds fans on social media.

First, does Gunnarsson merit a place back in the first team?

Might be reading this wrong but it sounds like he's way off match fitness like Patterson was when he first came back.
