I saw Halford in a cup game early on this season and my instinct was to say this lad is the worst player I've seen since Godfrey Ingram played for us but.... in the last few games I thought ok he can't control a ball but he's brave, good in the air and has improved.Thoughts?

As soon as Grujic and Paterson went off we were totally dominated in midfield by Barnsley and Halford was a major factor in this. He's far too static to be a midfielder. He could actually do a job as one of three centrebacks, if we ever play that formation. Bamba is much better in a similar role.

He chases shadows every game he plays in midfield.

Better than you think maybe, definetely not better than what I think. I happen to think he’s very good and I have no problems starting him, within reason in regards to the rest of the team. I think a midfield 3 of Halford, Grujic & Patterson would be more than ideal.
I don’t understand the “better than we think” conment though. He has been solid whenever we’ve played him? I would almost call him a midfield version of Morrison.

Most fans know Halford is bang average .At best he's a sub

Correct!
Halford doesn't have the mobility, first touch or passing ability to be a midfielder. When I see a lineup of Halford, Connolly and Bryson together you just know that we will struggle to retain possession.

MOM in two Big away wins last season Leeds on the Saturday Derby on the Wednesday.
Never lets us down and with the injuries we have expect to see a lot more of him between now and the end of the season.

I rate Halford - always have.
You know what you'll get from him every game, always put in 100%
He isn't the best player in the world and he does make mistakes but that's why he's a squad player and he is happy to be a squad player.
He tackles well, heads well, strong and knows his limits.

Agree - does the simple things well

For a while on Tuesday we lost our shape and Barnsley we’re running all over us just after Paterson and Grujic went off. Halford, with his considerable experience, got everyone organised so that we saw out the last 10 minutes with the minimum of fuss. A very useful player in those situations, and to make the odd start like he did against Bristol City.

Not his biggest fan but he does a job, great player to have on the bench at the moment.

A fair number of city fans think most of our players are crap.
how many times has there been debates on :
Etheridge
Peltier
Ralls
Gunnerson
Zahore
Halford
Lang
Bryson
Madine
J Ward
Lets face some people just dont like to like our players.Mainly because of the same argument
i pay my money and i can say what i like...
We have a history of under valuing our players in the last 10 years or so.
this time we are second in the league and we start a thread with a terrible title as it assumes we ALL think Halford is not good. The poster might think he writes for everyone which is typical.
Halford is a good player and he wears his blue shirt with pride, that enough for me.

Was down the Vale today and, Halford was training alone. None of the other squad members were there. So FP to the lad for doing extra work.

Very average player but can to a job on the odd occasion he is needed

When i saw he was starting against the carrot crunchers i thought we would be on a hiding to nothing but thought he played really well and did the same against Barnsley

Agree, he’s reliable and does the basics very well.
“Greg Halfords a football genius!”

I think Halford is ok no brilliant but not rubbish either probably just average BUT that said with a bit of time he could grow into our team and become a great player. I think some fans are a bit unfair on him and as soon as people see him coming on a few shout oh no not Halford - but I think that's unfair.

Mate I think he's like 32... not much time left to grow / improve

Nothings changed apart from we're doing really well so people arnt looking for a scape goat. He's been solid since he got here.
Sun Mar 11, 2018 2:16 pm
When he first came to the club, I thought he was a waste of time but I’m beginning to appreciate his game much more now. He does the basic things very well which is very useful when he’s brought on to support the back 4.
Sun Mar 11, 2018 3:20 pm
Everyone around me Saturday moaned when he came on, personally felt he should have come on earlier as the midfield looked lost at times. When he came on he did exactly what was required and we looked much more solid and started to create a couple of chances because of it. People around me then commented on how well he did after the game but no doubt come next game they will be moaning about him again.
Sun Mar 11, 2018 3:42 pm
The problem is Bryson, Damour and Paterson all want to be at the front of the midfield 3 in this system and can't do the holding or tradition CM role very well. At least Halford can do the sit in front of the back 4 and that allows Grujic up field.
I can see him or Sol starting as DM on Tuesday

I believe Halford is a decent enough player for the correct circumstances. One thing that makes the difference as with Bamba & Hoilett. (Maybe not so much Hoilett. You can just give him the ball & he does his stuff!). They are Warnock players. He's managed them before, they all want to play for him, he knows what their best game is, and they know what roles he wants them to play. Halford is used to good effect when the circumstance requires it, and rarely lets us down. He's a Bluebird at the moment and gets my full support.
Sun Mar 11, 2018 4:33 pm
Lets face it a lot of our fans love to moan about their own players and haven't got a clue whos decent and whos not.
Halford is a decent player and loves Cardiff,, enough for me.
Sun Mar 11, 2018 5:59 pm
Poor old Halford gets a bit of undeserved stick, as do others for that matter. He’s ok in my book, he saved us a couple of times in the last few games when others simply lumped the ball upfield in panic. He’s a veteran, a decent pro, quietly gives 100%, CAN pass a ball, and Neil Warnock rates him enough to play him when needed. That’s enough for me. I like him. Anyway, it’s about the team, not individuals, and he’s a posituve addition. He’s a Bluebird!

I agree with this.
You don’t have to look back that long to when most were cursing Morrison and wanting him to lose the captaincy to other like Gunnarsson. Clueless.
Halford does a job that Warnock brought him in for and not to play every game and be first on the team sheet.
Sun Mar 11, 2018 9:06 pm
Halford more than many clearly demonstrate that Warnock has a plan. And not only that he has a plan b and c. He knew exactly what he was signing Halford for. Just like he knew what he was signing Bamba and hoilett for. He is shrewd and knows how to get the best out of his players. Compare that to some previous managers who seemed to sign players for the sake of it. Halford is a good solid utility player that can help close a game down if needed or add some protection for the back 4.
