Subbuteo

Mentioned in the players training today thread...Subbuteo, had them all football cricket, rugby
In the 70's, as a teenager we had a very competitive street league, 6 or so players...Mum used to hate it but I loved it, the Man city of the day..won everything!...the boys are coming round mum you need to iron the pitch please...What most grated her, we had a policy of shoes off at the front door and "Hairy's feet", the only one of us able to cultivate impressive sideburns, his plate of meat smelt like a well matured Danish blue..stank the house out for hours later

If you have some of these old Subbuteo sets, they could be worth very decent money especially if they are what is known as the classic heavy weight series (60’s and 70’s)
In the 80’s Subbuteo introduce lightweights, not so collectable.
I sold on Ebay 5 odd standard players red shirts and blue shirts found in the attic and was surprised that they fetched £20
A couple of weeks later, I was in the local chippee waiting for a batch of chips and picked up the free newspaper. A guy from Chelmsford was advertising 50 teams for £50. I phoned him up on the spot and offered him £65 to post them to me. He told me he was an ex International England Subbuteo player and they wouldn’t be worth much as he had painted numbers on the back of them and there were no boxes. I said OK, that’s fine, I’ll take them
50 teams duly arrived in sandwich bags and I was stunned to discover that quite a few were obscure Italian teams and also rare lower league and Scottish teams.
I eventually sold each team individually for a total of£760, highest individual price paid… £78 for Juventus.
Collectors from Italy and Singapore are particularly active, in most cases unusually for Ebay the bidding was all done and dusted the first few hours after putting them up.
Collectors are a very competitive bunch
