Championship promotion fate and the final Championship table

Thursday 1st March 2018

The latest table calculator charts how Cardiff City's promotion bid will fare come May

The Championship’s final run-in is quickly taking shape as we head into the final 12 games with Cardiff City primly placed to secure second spot.

As the season’s end draws closer, fans are beginning to do the maths, comparing the fixtures and crunching the numbers. Whether the Bluebirds can clinch automatic promotion or just a play-off spot remains up in the air.

Thankfully, though, Football Web Pages have done all the hard work to predict the final Championship table...and it’s good news for Neil Warnock and his men.

Using an algorithm based on previous scorelines to predict the outcomes of future matches, they have come up with the final Championship table.

And the Bluebirds are predicted to finish in second place, securing automatic promotion to the Premier League — but not without a nervy final day.

The supercomputer says Cardiff will secure second spot thanks to a final day win over Reading and that home form will hold the key over the last 12 games.

In fact, they aren’t predicted to win any more away games between now and the end of the season, picking up maximum points at home to keep third-placed Aston Villa at bay.

Here’s the Bluebirds’ predicted path to promotion:

Brentford 1-0 Cardiff City (L)

Cardiff City 2-0 Barnsley (W)

Cardiff City 3-0 Birmingham City (W)

Derby County 1-0 Cardiff City (L)

Cardiff City 2-0 Burton Albion (W)

Sheffield United 1-0 Cardiff City (L)

Cardiff City 1-0 Wolves (W)

Aston Villa 1-0 Cardiff City (L)

Norwich City 0-0 Cardiff City (D)

Cardiff City 2-0 Nottingham Forest (W)

Hull City 1-1 Cardiff City (D)

Cardiff City 2-0 Reading (W)

The predicted Top 10

1: Wolves (99 Pts)
2: Cardiff City (87 Pts)

3: Aston Villa (86 Pts)
4: Derby county (84 Pts)
5: Fulham (83 Pts)
6: Bristol City (78 Pts)

7: Middlesbrough (76 Pts)
8: Sheffield Utd (75 Pts)
9: Brentford (71 Pts)
10: Preston NE (70 Pts)

That's being very optimistic regarding home form! Also pessimistic about away results?
Can still finish 2nd but not using their logic. :old:

All good fun and probably not that far out, BUT I started to lose confidence when I read that the algorithm was based on previous scorelines. If that was the case England would have won the world cup every time since 1966. :laughing5:

Six away games and 1 goal and 2 points, not a chance that will happen

That would be a fantastic end of season table. And getting more possible with every game.

Does it say when Bristol City will get stuffed in the play-offs - semis or in the final?

Not a good start for the 'supercomputer' it failed to predict the Brentford game getting called off.... :P
