The Cardiff City players who've missed the most Championship games through injury and the two who've played every one

By Ian Mitchelmore

Wednesday 28th February 2018

Sol Bamba captained Cardiff City in their hard-fought 1-0 Severnside derby win over Bristol City in the absence of regular skipper Sean Morrison.

It's been the theme of the season for Neil Warnock who has only named an unchanged side in the league on three occasions so far this term, with only Bamba and Junior Hoilett featuring in every Championship game so far this season.

And here's a closer look at how many league games each Cardiff player has missed through injury so far in the 2017-18 campaign...

(Up to and including the 1-0 win over Bristol City. Not including players out on loan)

Junior Hoilett

Games played in: 34/34; Games missed through injury: 0

The Canadian has featured in every league game so far this season, and has only failed to start two Championship matches (Sunderland away and Preston at home) during the Bluebirds' 2017-18 campaign.

Sol Bamba

Games played in: 34/34; Games missed through injury: 0

As with Hoilett, Bamba has played a part in every single one of the Bluebirds' 34 league outings to date, starting 32 and coming off the bench in the away win over Sunderland and the home triumph against Bolton Wanderers.

Manchester City's Ilkay Gundogan and Cardiff City's Joe Ralls battle for the ball (Image: PA)
Joe Ralls

Games played in: 33/34; Games missed through injury: 1

The midfield ace has been a mainstay in the centre of the park for the Bluebirds this season, and the only blot on an otherwise immaculate copybook was the knock that ruled Ralls out of the stunning 3-1 home win over Leeds in September.

Lee Peltier

Games played in: 23/34; Games missed through injury: 5; Games missed through suspension: 1

The right-back's versatility has been a huge plus for Warnock, although the defender needed an operation which saw him miss all but one of the games in January while he has also been unavailable for the recent wins against Ipswich Town and Bristol City.

Joe Bennett

Games played in: 25/34; Games missed through injury: 5; Games missed through suspension: 1

The left-back suffered a calf injury in the 0-0 draw with Millwall in October while he was also unavailable for the 4-1 win at Leeds having been sent off in the FA Cup fourth round clash with Man City.

Sean Morrison

Games played in: 28/34; Games missed through injury: 6

Having featured in every single game under Warnock prior to being forced off the pitch in the 2-2 draw with his former club Reading at the Madejski Stadium, Morrison has gone on to miss six matches with groin problems, the latest of which saw him sit out the Severnside derby win over Bristol City.

Bruno Manga

Games played in: 30/34; Games missed through injury: 0

The Gabon international has found himself playing in the right-back role, with Bamba and Morrison occupying the central berths for the majority of the campaign so far. But the defender has been fully fit this season, much to the delight of Warnock who was without Manga for several months last term after he suffered knee ligament damage while on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Jazz Richards

Games played in: 9/34; Games missed through injury: 22

The versatile defender has had rotten luck with injuries this season, suffering an ankle problem in the away win over Sunderland that kept him out of action until the New Year before being sidelined once again following the FA Cup exit to Man City.

Danny Ward

Games played in: 18/34; Games missed through injury: 13

Having been made to wait for game time early on, Ward took his chance to shine with both hands, netting crucial goals against Fulham, Ipswich Town, Brentford and Nottingham Forest before suffering a knee injury in the home win over Norwich City that will keep him sidelined for the remainder of the campaign.

Kenneth Zohore

Games played in: 24/34; Games missed through injury: 10

The Dane missed two months of action between October and December after suffering an ankle injury, although he appears to have rediscovered his best form of late, netting the winners in the games against Ipswich Town and Bristol City.

Kadeem Harris

Games played in: 2/34; Games missed through injury: 27

The wideman suffered a freak injury in the Bluebirds' final pre-season game against Livingston and did not feature for the first team until he came off the bench in the 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough in January. But after another substitute appearance against Bristol City, Harris looks set to have an increasing impact on the first team between now and the end of the campaign.

Liam Feeney

Games played in: 16/34; Games missed through injury: 0

Feeney delivered one of his best showings in the Severnside derby win over Bristol City having extended his loan stay from Blackburn Rovers in January, and his form could give Warnock a real headache given that the Bluebirds are blessed with wing options right now.

Anthony Pilkington

Games played in: 4/34; Games missed through injury: 1

The Republic of Ireland international was named among the substitutes for the 2-2 draw with Reading before Christmas, but after the match, Warnock revealed that Pilkington wasn't actually fit to play. Despite his minimal impact this season, the 29-year-old has managed four goals in nine appearances in all competitions.

Greg Halford

Games played in: 10/34; Games missed through injury: 0

Mr versatile has always been available for action this season, and, as seen in the Bristol City win, has been reliable when called upon as injury cover.

Matt Connolly

Games played in: 3/34; Games missed through injury: 7

The versatile defender missed the opening day win over Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium with an ankle injury while he was absent for six league games on the bounce after making his first league appearance of the campaign against former club QPR on New Year's Day.

Aron Gunnarsson

Games played in: 12/34; Games missed through injury: 22

Another to have been blighted by injuries this term, Gunnarsson suffered his first problem away at Sunderland before being forced off the pitch only 20 minutes after coming on during the 1-0 loss to Birmingham. He made his comeback after more than a month out in the home win over Brentford before exiting the pitch prematurely with an ankle injury - which has since required surgery - in the 1-0 win at Barnsley.

Callum Paterson

Games played in: 20/34; Games missed through injury: 13

The horror knee injury Paterson suffered with Hearts kept him out of action for the first two months of his debut campaign in South Wales, although the Scot has made a significant impact on proceedings since making his debut against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium in October.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing

Games played in: 27/34; Games missed through injury: 3

Missed three games after being forced off the field in the early stages of the Bluebirds' 2-1 defeat to Bristol City at Ashton Gate in November while he has been an unused substitute on two occasions, also failing to make the matchday squad for the wins against Leeds United and Bolton Wanderers.

Loic Damour

Games played in: 23/34; Games missed through injury: 0

Has been selected in every single one of Warnock's matchday squads this season and is one of a select few not to pick up any injuries this season.

Craig Bryson

Games played in: 18/34; Games missed through injury: 11; Games ineligible to play in: 1

The central midfielder enjoyed a fine start to life in the Welsh capital following his season-long loan move from Derby, but missed the bulk of the December fixtures and then suffered an Achilles injury in the Boxing Day defeat to Fulham at Cardiff City Stadium.

Frederic Gounongbe has struggled with the Bluebirds
Frederic Gounongbe

Games played in: 3/34; Games missed through injury: 30

He was an unused substitute in the home win over Ipswich Town and made three first team appearances in November before suffering yet another long-term injury.

Jamie Ward

Games played in: 3/6; Games missed through injury: 3

The Northern Ireland international's Cardiff debut against Bolton lasted just 13 minutes, and he has not featured since his brief bow in the Welsh capital.

Armand Traore

Games played in: 3/6; Games missed through injury: 2

Traore made a blistering start to life with the Bluebirds, registering an assist on his debut at Leeds before scoring on his home bow against Bolton. The left-back was rested for the Millwall trip and has not played since the Middlesbrough win after being sidelined with a thigh problem.

Gary Madine

Games played in: 4/6; Games missed through injury: 2

Missed the games against former club Bolton Wanderers and Middlesbrough after breaking his nose in the draw at Millwall, but Madine has featured in every other game for the Bluebirds since joining the club on transfer deadline day.

Rhys Healey

Games played in: 3/34; Games missed through injury: 23

The forward missed the bulk of 2017 after suffering a double knee ligament injury against Rotherham in February last year, but he played in the games against Fulham, Preston and Queens Park Rangers after Christmas.

Neil Etheridge

Games played in: 33/34; Games missed through injury: 0

Has played in all but one of the Bluebirds' Championship fixtures so far this season, keeping 16 clean sheets in the process.

Brian Murphy

Games played in: 1/34; Games missed through injury: 0

Having made just two appearances all season - both of which came in the Carabao Cup - Murphy played the full 90 minutes of the 2-1 defeat to QPR at Loftus Road on New Year's Day. His only other appearance for the first team came against Mansfield Town in the third round of the FA Cup.

Marko Grujic

Games played in: 6/7; Games missed through injury: 0

Started in seven consecutive matches in all competitions following his loan switch from Liverpool in January but was left on the bench for the 1-0 win over Bristol City. Completed the full 90 minutes in the games against Man City and Bolton.

Yanic Wildschut on his Cardiff City debut against Sunderland
Yanic Wildschut

Games played in: 4/8; Games missed through injury: 0

The Dutchman impressed on his Cardiff debut against Sunderland in January and went on to feature in the games against Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United and Bolton.

You could say Pilks and Connolly have been very costly this season.

Pliks is about £25,000 a week, but Warnock could not move him on as No one would pay him that type of moneu.

Anthony Pilkington

Games played in: 4/34; Games missed through injury: 1

The Republic of Ireland international was named among the substitutes for the 2-2 draw with Reading before Christmas, but after the match, Warnock revealed that Pilkington wasn't actually fit to play. Think that’s a bit harsh on Pilks though. Barely been given a chance by recent managers because the club want him out to save money. But all the time Warnock says that he hasn’t stopped working in training and has a great attitude.

And I think he has the quality to be involved as well.

Or you could look at it positively and state pilks; who was out of favour, worked his way back into contention and scored some important goals for us. To a point where it was stated he wasn’t being moved on. I would give him full credit for that as he has done well for us at a time we really needed him. The whole squad has a bond he is part of it, hasn’t sulked or thought he was better than he was by the sounds of it just did his job. Credit to him.

The fact that he hasn’t played much. He’s definitely on too much money, but does a good job when called upon - has a good attitude too.

True Ned he can be, But Warnock has hardly used him which means he does not rate him, even with all the injuries. 4 Championship games and his wages this season will have cost us over £1mill, that’s £250,000!a game

I can’t do the quote thing, sorry :-)

I don’t doubt he has always been available, and it was generally the concenous he was one of those to be shifted on, but injuries and so on meant he had a part to play. He played it well, well enough to still be a part of the squad. He got himself on the score sheet as well so whilst his wages maybe more than some if his goals contribute to going up then happy days.

The bulk of the deadwood was shifted, new players not up to it were shifted, plus if; touchwood it doesn’t, zahore or Madine get injured he’s the go to man. I am not his biggest fan at all, he has just proved when needed he can chip in. Win win

Not only that, but by chipping in with goals when hardly played means he could be worth a few bob at the end of the season recoup some of his wages etc?? Who knows in this day and age goals means money

Anyway that’s my glass half full for today

To be successful you need a good squad. Pilks is a proven championship player and when called upon has done well. Yes his ages are high. Didn't believe its 25k mind? 17 to 18k I thought.

Anyway his attitude and training as stated by warnock has been first class. Played with kids in reserves and training not worked his way now to be part of 1st team. Works hard when as too

not sure about those stats - I recall Bamba sitting out a whole match not even in the squad, near the end of the transfer window?
