Mon Feb 26, 2018 7:38 pm

At lunch time today i was trying to work out Bristols claim to fame in sporting terms

Football - I believe the biggest city never to have been in the premier league
Rugby - Second tier nobodies
Cricket - Can never remember anything of note
Boxing- supermiddle weight in the 90's (can't recall his name)
Cycling - ??
Swimming ??
Snooker ??
Track ?
Field sports ?

No wonder they are a frustrated bunch....Are they any good at tractor pulling on the international stage

Not a great list given the size of the place. They are claiming Carol Vorderman somehow too. They must be desperate

I've got nothing against Bristol. Don't particularly like the Wurzels, (Bristol City), don't mind the Gas, and no interest in any other sport.

Bit harsh on Bristol, Cardiff is hardly the pinnacle of British sport!

Ryan Giggs, Gareth Bale, Craig Bellamy, Colin Jackson, John Toshack. Boxers Steve Robinson, Barry Jones both world champions and from Ely.

At a push you could include Precious McKenzie a weightlifter who won gold for England at the Commonwealth Games.

Only problem is he wasn't actually born in Bristol (he was South African) but moved there to complete a Physical Education degree after being 'adopted' as English as he couldn't represent South Africa due to the apartheid regime which ruled the country at the time.

I suppose it is 'grasping at straws' but that's something the Wurzzels do well ;)

Nicky Piper looked and sounded like a lanky Harry Potter. But would not people out for fun.
