Angry Bristol City fans label Cardiff City trip ‘dead’ following heavy police restrictions
By Jamie Kemble

The shortest away trip of the season was not an enjoyable one for Bristol city supporters

Bristol City Supporters Club and Trust have labelled their Severnside derby trip to South Wales as ‘dead’ after heavy police restrictions were put in place for their match at Cardiff City Stadium.

The Robins faithful were left aggrieved on Sunday afternoon when their shortest away trip of the season became more like a nightmare, and not just because their team were defeated 1-0 n the Severnside derby clash.

Bristol City were outraged when a 40% reduction was placed on their allocation for the highly anticipated Severnside derby, so much so that they rejected an extra 979 tickets because they would have been subject to further restrictions.

It was announced in the lead up to the game that the 1,491 Bristol City fans who did make the trip via coaches or mini-buses were required to meet between a 30-minute period at Junction 33 services to be escorted straight into the ground.

Away supporters travelling on buses were also stopped from being dropped off within a 10-mile radius of the Cardiff City Stadium and it’s claimed that venues in the City centre required ID with a Welsh address to gain admission.

Such requirements have left travelling supporters furious, especially after their club allowed 2,600 Cardiff City fans to make their way across the Severn Bridge without any restrictions when the two clubs met in November.

Bristol City Supporters Club and Trust expressed their concerns on their website following the fixture, saying: “How to squeeze all the atmosphere and pleasure out of a local derby in one fell swoop. Well done the Heddlu! In my view, Cardiff away as a fixture is now officially dead.

“Already subjected to a reduced 1,481 ticket allocation, a 12.00 kick-off on a Sunday and no local train service, what else could Bristol City fans expect to make their away day go any better? Well, you could be barred from all pubs in the city centre before and after the game unless you had ID with a Cardiff address.

“All coaches and mini buses could have to comply with an ‘RVP’ (whatever that is) and report to Junction 33 services between 10.15am & 10.45am to then be escorted directly into the away compound at the stadium by the police. That would also mean no drop-off of passengers within a 10 mile radius of the ground without police permission. And that is precisely what we experienced on Sunday!

“As far as we are aware, there was no trouble and never likely to be. I suspect South Wales Police will use this as justification for such heavy handed policing.

“For the record, the Supporters Club & Trust position is that any law-abiding football fans attending a game anywhere in the country should be allowed to travel unrestricted and enjoy their day out.

“Yes, that also includes Cardiff fans travelling to Ashton Gate.”

South Wales Police say they enforced such measures in order to protect the “high standards” of good behaviour of the fans, professional stewarding and effective policing” at the Cardiff City Stadium.

They also confirmed that a bubble trip would have required Bristol City fans to travel on official coaches – which they didn’t have to do on this occasion - and that Bristol City turned down the opportunity to have an increased allocation.

The statement read: “We acknowledge the vast majority of Bristol City fans behave impeccably, however unfortunately there have been serious incidents of disorder involving a sizeable number of their travelling supporters at the Cardiff City Stadium in recent seasons.

“To maximise away support, yet prevent further incidents, a proposal to have a soft control measure in the form of a ticket exchange at junction 33 of the M4 for 2,460 fans was made but declined by Bristol City Football Club.

“As a result, to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all those at the game, the Cardiff Safety Advisory Group gave consideration to the overwhelming evidence and accordingly confirmed a reduction in the ticket allocation by 40 per cent.”

A Cardiff City steward was assaulted at the ground when the two sides met last season.

Bristol fan Ki Stone, 25, from Lydney, Gloucester, was handed a five-year football banning order together with a 16-week prison sentence, which was suspended for 12 months, at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court for his attack on the steward.

He was also ordered to pay a total of £700 in fines, costs and compensation.

A court heard how the steward needed hospital treatment after being punched and kicked by Stone at the match.

Was never in agreement with the restrictions but Bristol City fans need to understand that their own so-called supporters brought it on themselves! :(

Lets just hope there's no fixture to worry about next season, as they're sure to go 'tit-for-tat' at Ashton Gate. It's the Bristol mentality! ;) :thumbright:

The Bristol City fans are just jealous that Cardiff are a far better team than they are.

Hey, it's conceivable that we may yet have to play them home and away again this season. I really hope not, but if we are to be in the playoffs then I would rather play them than some of the others.

As much as all the rivalry and banter goes on don't agree with treatment like this had similar at some away venues, all this is overkill and totally ruining the atmosphere of the build up and game itself.

They sound very bitter.haha. Claim to play the best free flowing football in league yet couldn’t string 3 passes together.

Bristol fans ‘claiming’ to be in the Cardiff end saying the fans should be proud, they were loud all game? I was in the canton end and I probably heard them twice all game And that was only for a few seconds. Was hardly a loud atmosphere either to drown them out.

At the end of the day Cardiff got the result, wasn’t our fault it was a rubbish 12 o’clock kick off and they had to watch bad football. Furthermore, They had to drive back to a shithole to round of a great day of footy

This isn't a new thing. Clubs / Police have treated Cardiff like shit for years, only in recent times has this improved.

Personally, I have no sympathy what so ever. This season was the first season in years our fans got to travel unrestricted to Bristol! However this was the first season in years that Bristol have had restrictions put on them despite the fact that some of there fans have caused trouble at everyone of those games. I can't get over how much they have moaned about it!!

Tell all your fans to behave, don't smash up furniture in a pub, don't hit stewards because you've had a few cans, don't throw fireworks in the concourse of stadiums and don't start scrapping with the police after games and maybe you won't have this type of restriction in future.
