Warnock's transfer dealings - your thoughts?

Sun Feb 04, 2018 8:52 pm

Thought I might prepare a list of all the players signed by Neil Warnock since he arrived at the club (as far as I can remember :old:) and whether (in my opinion only of course) they have been a success or not.

There is no agenda here at all and I am absolutely delighted with the way the manager and his staff ( supported in fairness by the owner) have transformed the whole club in such a short time and made it a real pleasure to follow the City again. :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Chamakh - failure
Hoilett - success
Bamba - success
Richardson - failure.
McGregor - Neither really. Did ok but nothing special.
Tomlin - failure
Danny Ward - success
Feeney - Jury out for me.
Halford - Has his detractors but is solid without being spectacular so I'll say mostly a success.
Paterson - success
Mendez- Laing - Started off great but poor for a while. Jury's out.
Damour - Mostly a success.
Bryson - Jury's out.
Grujic - too early to say
Etheridge - success
Jamie Ward - too early to say
Bogle - in view of the fact that the manager seems happy for him to leave - failure
Wildschut - too early to say
Madine - too early to say
Traore - too early to say
Camp - failure

Apologies if I've missed anyone out but when I typed them all out like that I realised just how many players have come into and gone out of the club in the 15 months that Warnock has been in charge!

Some really good players in that group who have improved us massively in the short time they've been here and some who have been disappointing but I suppose the same is true of all clubs.

Feel free to disagree with any or all of the above.

I’d be looking at his net spend compared to league position. On the whole I think he has been very shrewd. Any deemed a failure have been quickly moved on. None of this rotting with the kids then cancelling conctracts for bucket loads of cash. He gives each and every one a chance with the exception of perhaps camp but he was injured. I think it’s safe to say he had a plan in mind with his transfers even if they haven’t worked out. People moan about Halford but he does precisely what he was signed for. A sold if unspectacular player that Warnock trusts to do a job. Even Feeney does what he is asked to do. Not cost a lot. Come on late and run at tired players.

Compare that to previous managers who seemed to sign players for the sake of it.

Warnock has even given chances to slades signings and made good of them. Murphy is a shining example.

This side is a Warnock side. He built it even if he didn’t sign all of them. But the fact a lot are would indicate he knows what he is doing so on balance i would say he had been successful.

Thing is chamakh and Richardson were both signed on small contracts as a way to see if they would fit in, I wouldn’t call either transfer a failure even though both didn’t work out.

There’s also a lot to be said for the signing of someone like Halford, who Warnock obviously trusts, a good professional around the squad and someone who can fill in where needed. I remember last season he started back to back away wins against Leeds and derby.

Players like tomlin and camp though, we’re both signed to be first choice players unlike the three mentioned above, camp was injured when we bought him so was a bigger gamble, but as both were expected to be an integral part of the team this season they have to be deemed as a failure

Last one from me, NML looked like he had been rescued from the doldrums when we first signed him , but if he’s not careful he’s going to end up back in the lower leagues pretty soon, he’s gone from fantastic, to quite poor to outright useless and needs to rediscover the player he was for the first couple of months of the season
