Neil Etheridge lays down a real marker

By Ian Miltchelmore

It came as something of a surprise on transfer deadline day that the Bluebirds were set to allow Lee Camp to join Sunderland on loan for the remainder of the season.

But Camp's departure came just days before what proved to be arguably Neil Etheridge's best display in between the sticks for Cardiff City.

The 58-cap Philippines international pulled off a fine one-handed stop to tip Pierre-Michel Lasogga's long range strike on to the post just minutes after Callum Paterson gave the Bluebirds a 1-0 lead.

And midway through the opening half, Etheridge - after Lasogga somehow guided a free header on to the crossbar - pulled off a wonder save to deny Ezgjan Alioski's effort from the rebound.

There was little he could to about Sol Bamba's own goal, but ultimately, Cardiff's No.1 produced the goods when it mattered the most.

And after there was an intense debate in the summer over who would start in goal for the Bluebirds this season, this week has definitively showed that - barring injury - Etheridge will take some ousting from the starting XI.

There is no doubt he is a talented young keeper and a great shot stopper.
His main flaw in my eyes is his distribution. He is so slow at seeing counter attacks and needs to work on his kicking.
He will become a great keeper just needs more experiance and coaching at this level.

maybe he is instructed not to throw the ball out quickly? Mcgregor didn't either.

There may be something in what you say about him being instructed.

If you notice that once Etheridge has the ball in his hands most of the players turn their back on the ball and head upfield and rarely go short to look for the ball from the keeper.

Also when Murphy played against QPR it was very noticeable how much more quickly he released the ball including one superb kick that put Junior almost through on goal.

Murphy didn't play the next league game though!!

Thats a good point about murphy he was releasing quicklyand it worked well.
I would find it strange though if he was instructed to hold the ball as our game is pretty much based on long quick counter attacks through our wingers.

He also had a couple of bum kicks in that game that nearly cost us.

Yes he did and Etheridge's main area of weakness is his kicking - perhaps our goalkeeping coaches should spend a bit of time on kicking the ball!

Proved me wrong.

I was one of many who slated him earlier on in the season but he’s improved a lot.

Think he benefitted from being dropped for Murphy a few weeks ago - who is also a very good goalkeeper.

It’s a well known Warnock instruction. He has done it at all his clubs.

One thing I noticed at the man city game that's never crossed my mind before.

When we kick it out we flood the right hand side of the field.

When city kicked it out their players were all over the field, not in any particular area.

Is that down to tactics or the keepers kicking skills at being able to pick a player out?

Nothing new there as Marshall also had very poor kicking skills apart from one I recall that went straight to Kenny Miller and the ball was in the back of the net with 2 touches...

I was there - really bizarre BIG Kenny winning anything from a lump upfield, but yes he finished brilliantly. Agree I used to think Marshy wasn't the best at kicking wither - at least once or twice a game the dead ball would go straight into touch. From seeing them both I reckon they are both very similar on kicking.

Etheridge kicking is definately the worst I’ve seen of any keeper at Cardiff

Doesn’t mean he hasn’t been brilliant though, with Madine now up top it’s important to get more consistency in the kicking

OMG Etheridge is certainly not the worst kicker Cardiff have had worse and Marshal was poor at kicking and many people said why Marshal was not wanted by a top prem team when we got relegated was his kicking let him down.

Goal against sunderland at Sunderland 3 touches .... dare I say a great Kick from Etheridge, zohore head to Bryson goal.

Kicking is so important to the prem goalkeepers as already said we need to work on it as Etheridge is so young as a goalkeeper

You can pick out that one time he kicked the ball well sure.

Marshall’s kicking wasn’t great , but etheridges’ Is more consistently poorer than marshall
