Is sheep shagger racist/offensive?

Sun Feb 04, 2018 2:48 pm

Is being called a “sheep shagger” racist/offensive or just to be accepted if you’re Welsh?
I know as city fans we call ourselves it just to mock the opposition etc but should we accept it?
The reason I ask is that I watched the selby/warrington fight build up and warrington fans were chanting “sheep shagger” at selby and no one seemed bothered. Promoter, press, security etc just seemed to acknowledge the chanting as acceptable.

No one is ever bothered by it

But it is a form of racism and could be deemed offensive

I’m sorry but if the league and stewards kick off st people chanting ‘we can see you holding hands ‘ to Brighton

They should punish opposing fans chanting sheep shaggers , not that I give a crap about it but in terms of comparing to other race issues then yes they should

Not sure about racist but it would be labelled as xenophobic I guess and certainly something you could get in trouble for if said to the wrong person in work

Not really something that bothers me though

Not politically correct ask spurs fans who were criticised for singing about themselves!
Not sure what sheep think of being labelled shaggers though ? :laughing6:

Offensive is a relative term though , you can’t tell people what is or isn’t offensive

Surely the whole point of them singing it is to cause offense to Welsh people ?

Re: Is sheep shagger racist/offensive?

I suppose my main point is that it seems acceptable to insult the Welsh (can’t see it being a compliment). It doesn’t bother me at a football ground, but the chanting was at a pre fight conference and no one seemed bothered....as though it was expected and accepted.
As a previous poster pointed out - far less offensive chants have been stamped out and people getting into serious trouble for saying less insulting things.

It’s supposed to be offensive, the English wouldn’t sing it otherwise. But if it does offend you then maybe football isn’t for you.

If it offends someone I’d suggest life isn’t for them and to lock themselves away

But it’s said to cause offense, I just can’t see anyone actually getting offended by it

Personally I don't give a damn and just take it as bit of banter. But from an objective point of view I can't think of anything more offensive and as it is applied to the Welsh is a racial slur if you regard the Welsh as a race. If it was applied to any other minority there would be howls of outrage and the police would today be arresting those caught on camera singing it and it would form a major news item on BBC. Even the mildest of perceived discrimination brings the busy bodies ( many who have never been to a game in their life but have built careers in the discrimination industry) demanding action be taken by the football authorities/police/government.

Personally I couldn't care, but with all the other political correctness going around for every other sex, race sexuality and whatever, it should be treated in the same way, you can't have one rule for one and one for another.

Whether or not we give a damn about it is almost irrelevant but it is quite clearly a racist comment as it is aimed in almost all circumstances at Welshmen. We appear to take it in good spirit at football matches when the opposing crowd sing it to us but if an Englishman called you a sheepshagger to your face I'm sure that most of us would feel very insulted. It shouldn't be allowed in the current climate for one racial group to slur another. I didn't see the Selby weigh in but I bet that he felt humiliated to have a large group of people aiming racist vitriol just at him.

Derby away last season they were singing"we shag more sheep than you".also derbyshire/rural clubs (Shrewsbury) seem to get it.

To the Soyboy snowflake generation everything offensive, singing Delilah is mysoginistic, wearing a sombrero is misappropriation of Mexican culture Furfuxsake! Lewis Hamilton got slaughtered on social media for opining little boys shouldn’t wear frocks, when Ernie was playing for Palace opposing fans chanted sheep shagger, that meant nobody gave a fekk if he was black or white, he was just another British player getting a bit of abusive banter. Right that rants tired me out I’m away for a lie down.

Political Correctness is a load of Bollocks. It is supposed to be a free speech country.
People today are too easily offended. (WIMPS)
People who are offended so easily need to grow a pair.
Is being called a Taff, Jock or Paddy offensive. NO

I'm sure there is. But anything said in the wrong environment can be taken one way or the other. Those useless whores on loose women get paid fortunes to sit on their fat arse and talk about this shit all day. It's not even worth a discussion.
