A man who drove a van into a crowd of Muslims near a north London mosque has been sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum term of 43 years behind bars.

Darren Osborne, 48, was found guilty of murdering Makram Ali, 51, in June last year, after deliberately ploughing into a crowd of people in Finsbury Park.

Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb said Osborne, from Cardiff, had planned "a suicide mission" and expected to be shot dead.

"This was a terrorist attack - you intended to kill," the judge told him.

Osborne, who had been found guilty of murder and attempted murder, said "God bless you all, thank you", as he was led away from court.

The father-of-four deliberately mowed down worshippers in Finsbury Park shortly after 12.15am on 19 June last year, killing Mr Ali and injuring 12 others.

The jury took an hour to return the verdict at Woolwich Crown Court on Thursday after a nine-day trial.

Justice Cheema-Grubb told Osborne the jury in his trial had seen though his "pathetic last-ditch attempt to deceive them".

She said he was "rapidly radicalised over the internet by those determined to spread hatred of Muslims".

"Your use of Twitter exposed you to racists and anti-Islamic ideology," she added.

"In short you allowed your mind to be poisoned by those who claimed to be leaders."

Before sentencing, the court heard a statement from Razina Akhtar, the daughter of Mr Ali, who said she had suffered "recurring nightmares" since the death of her father.

"The incident was near to our house and I walk past it most days. It keeps me awake at night thinking about the attack."

She said her mother, Mr Ali's widow, was now scared to go outside by herself for fear of being attacked.

"My father was the most sincere and warmest person I know. He was full of jokes and laughter, and full of love for his family and grandchildren.

"His life was taken in a cruel way by a narrow-minded, heartless being," the statement added.

Other witness suffered feelings of anxiety, flashbacks, fear of going out and loss of confidence, prosecutors said.

Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb also heard a list of Osborne's previous convictions - including violent offences - spanning more than 30 years.

Osborne had appeared before the courts on 33 occasions for 102 offences, she was told

The judge said Osborne's previous convictions showed a "belligerent and violent character".

She said Mr Ali died immediately after being struck by the van. He was found with tyre marks on his torso, she added.

The people Osborne targeted included both young and old, someone who was deaf, and a man using a wheelchair.

The guy is a murderer who killed innocent people, deserves 43 years. If it was the other way round some people would say it should be doubled.

I've read many a book of the likes of him and I just wonder how this types are allowed to walk the streets. I'm all for freedom of speech and movement providing it provides just that....freedom. People like this take that away so as far as I am concerned should be taken out.

And the establishment are trying to blame TR for radicalising him. Quite pathetic and typical of the agenda set by this Country's authorities

Freedom of speech has to cover a broad range though. If you or I wanted to tweet that we disagreed with the influx of migrants because of the increase risk of terrorism we would be allowed to do so. Tweeting “kill all the immigrants” however would be a completely different matter.

It’s not a job I’d want to do, be working within counter terrorism in the police force. Do we arrest anyone sharing an EDL video or post?

It is a difficult thing to stop and our freedom of speech is under threat.

However I do question if we are doing enough to try and stop it. We have never sorted out the extreme sides of our elements like the Britain First, EDL, hate preaching Muslim element and going back as far as the National Front. All these elements hide behind the Freedom of Speech rule and the average person in the UK would agree they are abusing it. Even so within these elements are those that step over the line to make all of us uncomfortable and we should be at least taking them out of the equation.

I know some in authority will say that is what they are doing taking these eccentric guys down. Well if they are I wish they would broadcast this more as it just might make these fruit cakes think for once. Adding to that I wish the punishment was a lot severe for not so much the eccentric cases. We seem to punish heavily the extreme cases as a show to the public but mellow right down for cases that are not too far of being extreme.

It's a difficult one I agree but I do believe what I say above would help. Would I do the job is easy to answer and it would be a big no.

Yes our legal system is inconsistent but at least both were put away. So many stories I read about such the likes getting off a custodial sentence. Hilary Clinton being a prime example where she represented a pedophile who she claimed was as guilty as hell but she got him off a custodial when she came to an agreement with the other party.

I'm not saying I agree with the legal rationale but they would explain it by saying Osbourne was convicted of a terrorist killing which is deemed more serious because terror is an attack against us all rather than one individual family.

I find it hard to agree with the above I think both killings were deserving of 40+ years in jail.

Personally the people to blame here are those who have created a bitterly divided nation based on race colour and creed with their totally irresponsible mass immigration policies over the past 50 years. Every Home Secretary and Prime Minister since 1950 (if still alive) should be charged and jailed as they are ultimately responsible for radical terrorism on both sides.
