INTERESTING STATEMENT FROM BOLTONS CHAIRMAN

Thu Feb 01, 2018 1:05 pm

He’s been talking about the Madine Transfer, interesting :thumbright: :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

The Bolton chairman Ken Anderson says regarding Madine.

Thursday 1st February 2018

Bolton Chairman: "Both clubs agreed not to disclose the transfer details and none has been put out."

A great deal has been written and said elsewhere about the transfer of Gary Madine, and l can say that, like many of you, l was very disappointed to lose him.

However, despite all that has been written and said elsewhere, even by some of the people close and actively involved in the transfer, it became obvious to me towards the end of last week that Gary and his advisors had decided on a move away despite having made what l considered to be a very good, new contract offer to Gary, whereby his salary and add-ons effectively doubled his current salary and extended the length of the contract by a further year to 2020.

However, for whatever their reasons, Gary and his advisors declined to accept our proposals.

Indeed, discussions came to a stage whereby Gary submitted a written transfer request on January 24, which was after the initial offers from Cardiff had been received and swiftly declined, and despite all the efforts made by the manager and myself to keep Gary, it was not to be.

I reluctantly agreed on Tuesday to meet with the Cardiff chairman personally to try and reach an agreement that would be financially beneficial and acceptable to the club.

As l said in my notes on January 17, and have said in the past, if and when an exceptional offer was made for any of our players, l would also have to consider the club’s longer term financial situation and base my final decision on now and the future, which as we all now know, culminated in Gary moving to Cardiff on a three-year deal and on substantially better terms than we could have offered him if l was to continue the prudent and commercially financial path that we are now having to take.

I do not blame or disagree with Gary’s decision and fully understand that he has to consider his own and his family’s future as the life and career of a professional footballer is a short one and is sometimes made even shorter by injury, as has clearly been seen with Mark Davies.

Both clubs agreed not to disclose the transfer details, but surprisingly - and l don’t know how - the level of the fee and the payment terms that have been referred to elsewhere and the figures being bandied around are not that far from reality, maybe a little exagerated.

Indeed, the transaction is one of the largest in this Sky Bet Championship window and is up there with previous club record transfers.

Furthermore, l can say that the determining factor in agreeing to the transfer, albeit that it was only reluctantly and finally accepted on Wednesday morning, was the fact a fee was to be paid immediately with further substantial add-ons in the future dependent on achievements, together with a substantial share of any future transfer proceeds.

That's the way I read it. Final fee dependent on how we perform, as well as a sell on clause. He says it's close to what is being reported, which I think was around £3m up front, rising to around £6m if we go up.

Norms, he does not say City paid it all upfront?

He actually states we paid a substantial amount upfront with payments later depending on other stuff etc :thumbright:

Yeah I misread it. Looks that way.

Re: INTERESTING STATEMENT FROM BOLTONS CHAIRMAN

Boltons record sale is Nicholas Anelka for £15million

Other than that the second is Gary Cahill for £7million followed by a load of £4million sales.

If the fee is as he says "up there" then its fair to assume that it is between 4-7million.

I hope it is the lower end of that if im being honest. Even at £4million he is a big financial gamble for our club.

What surprises me is people expecting to get a forward for peanuts yes sounds bit expensive if take package as a whole, but the way it's slanted makes sense all round especially if it gets us to playoffs

No problem Norms :thumbright: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :bluebird:

I've been told it was def £2mill upfront which is massive to pay that amount upfront, plus £4mill in add ons promotion/appearances etc.

Bolton are really skint and £2mill upfront meant a lot to them :thumbright:

Money talks as they say :thumbright: :ayatollah:

£2mill upfront / plus £4mill if City are promoted / appearances etc etc :thumbright:

We prob made £1mill v Man City :thumbright: :bluebird:

Agreed :thumbright:

Allan, strikers are never cheap, they cost money and prolific strikers would be £10-£15mill plus.

Seems like we may have agot a decent deal, couple of million for a striker isn't a lot and the add ons to be expected.

Now he needs to produce.

He appears to be kind striker we need/want hopefully he will help ken as NW likes 442 formation ? Feel we've lost our way through all the injuries and this window as given us opportunity to re establish our playing style from earlier in season

i make it 1 goal in 3 this season and 1 in 4 last. strikers who guarantee a goal every 2 at this level are going for £12-15m plus nowadays.

he's been in trouble with the police before, so that's my concern, not so much the price, which is probably in line with his value as a footballer. he should be able to come in and do a job straightaway which is why we've paid probably a smidgen over the odds.

Not saying his signing will get us promotion but if it does then 7 Million will be paid back 30 fold. Football is a gamble.
