Manchester City forward Leroy Sane suffered ankle ligament damage in his side's FA Cup win at Cardiff on Sunday, the club have confirmed.

It is not known how long the Germany international will be out for.

The 22-year-old was injured in a challenge by Cardiff's Joe Bennett and was substituted during the 2-0 win.

"Sane has since undergone scans that confirm he is set for a spell on the sidelines - no timeline has been set for his return," his club said.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola urged referees to "protect" players after Sane was injured.

He suggested Sane could miss up to a month of action.

Bennett was later sent off for a second yellow card after a challenge on Brahim Diaz.

And later on Sunday, he apologised for the tackle on Sane in a statement on social media.

Man city medical team should have taken him off straight away.
That running around for that 3 or 4 minutes done a lot of damage.
Bennett's caught him on the calf , not ankle ????

Come off it,you only have to see that photo to see his ankle was bent more than was normal. If his ankle didn't give like it did he may well have had a broken leg.Glad your not my feckin doctor.

Well, if you look at it carefully, it was a natural bend/movement in the ankle joint that probably saved the boy Sane form serious injury and he managed to carry on for a while afterwards. The 'still' photo makes it look worse!

Can't blame Sane or the Man City staff (at worse, they were somewhat fooled by his ability to carry on) and can't crucify the lad Joe Bennett either. He went in hard, he mis-timed and the referee took what he thought at the time was appropriate action!

Multiple TV replays, Tweets, Forums and (of course) the most bias media of all, Match of the Day, have made this a lot worse than it really was and if it was any other club we wouldn't be debating beyond a cursory comment! :(

Hopefully the lad is not to bad, a class player though prone to a bit of diving, he is still a great player to watch :thumbright:

Whilst accepting the tackle looked horrendous, why did he play on for a further 35 minutes aggravati the injury which probably put him out for longer than necessary
