The elephant in the stadium

That nobody has discussed.

1st goal.

De Bryne free kick

City wall jumped

So close to goal. Naive defending

Warnock and team got done. This situation and possibility not discussed

Top players are using this tactic and has been seen recently to score

Most players curl / chip over wall and if KDB had done this our wall may have been able to block.
Not naive imho.

I thought you were going to talk about the fat bloke in 103 who's arse took up two seats.

So close to goal to get up and over. Although not impossible for De Bryne.

I think Coutinho scored like this for Liverpool recently.

You will not see walls jumping when free kick awarded just outside pen area. This will be phased out

Could you have one player lie down behind the wall ???

It would look stupid, but would have stopped that goal and the players could have jumped to stop the up and down over the wall !

Yes! Nothing to stop that. I'm sure some anorak footy fan can tell us if this has been done before :bluebird:

Tactics have to be altered for free kick situations due to the skill of the free-kick takers coupled with bowling green type pitches

I'm not sure whether it may be you who is actually being naive.

99% of free kicks go up and over the wall and therefore 99% of walls jump ! Does that make 99% of managers naive !!??

The wall consisted of Morrison, Zohore, Manga, Grujic, Patterson and NML, 6 of out tallest players. We had clearly done our homework and noted that De Bruyne always goes over the wall and therefore we tried to make it as diffcult as possible for him to get it up and down.

He gambled and it came off. If it had gone any more than 6 inches off the floor it would have probably caught someones studs and trickled into the keepers hands, bt he executed it perfectly and sometimes a gamble comes off.

So no, not naive defending just very inteligent football from Man City.

Yes intelligent. Making the point that this goal has been done just weeks before it happened again. KDB certainly admired what Coutinho had done

Griff, it would be like having Derwyn Jones back playing for the Wales egg team!

Certainly not 'naive' from City. It was more 'clever' thinking by one of the world's best players at the moment

As soon as we gave away that free kick in that position, I expected a goal to follow; just not like that (although I had to wait to get home to see it, thanks to that pesky mascot bird thing who was right in my line of sight at the time! )

Have to salute the guy De Bruyne and from that moment on, I think Man City were able to be themselves, grab second goal and then pretty much control the game at a pace that suited them :thumbright:

Maybe the goalkeeper getting his positioning right in the first place and not leaving himself wrong footed would help a bit.
Other than that maybe a guy on the post to stop that sort of shot would be better.

Blame! Blame! Blame!!

Nonsense- it was just sheer brilliance.

Etheridge had an outstanding game saved us a few times.

The free kick was very clever and obviously they did there homework.
But watch it back and look at his positioning, i dont fully blame him because the wall should never jump with a free kick of that distance but thought he could have done a bit better if im being honest. The shot was not hit hard it was passed into the net, he left a lot of room to his right sonhis positioning was questionable and he was wrong footed so couldnt move.
It was a great free kick but also pretty poor goalkeeping.
Just being honest and i think etheridge is a talented young goalkeeper so nothing against him.

His positioning and footwork were wrong. He left himself no chance with the right hand side of his goal against one of the best free kick takers in the world

Re: The elephant in the stadium

Mon Jan 29, 2018 5:08 pm

Everything was set correctly for free kick goalkeeper covering one corner wall the other ! He wasn't going to beat goalie only option was the wall, no need for them to jump as realistically to close to go over wall and under bar even without wall jumping? If did score no problem just brilliant kick, but to be beaten way we were after similar thing was done recently shows lack of preparation!

Re: The elephant in the stadium

Mon Jan 29, 2018 6:10 pm

This is a mad thread.

Lets be honest, about five or six years ago a i would have fancied Whitts a top end championship dead ball specialist to hit the target from that position and we would be hoping the net would rattle.

Yesterday when a world class player with outstanding technique stood there i expected nothing else but for him to score. He scored with ingenuity and the ability to still place it where he wanted. The keeper could do nothing.

According to the BBC, KDB had done this before, so fair play to him to try it. No way can Etheridge be blamed for that goal.
