Warnock, 69, and in his 17th management job, is proving an inspired appointment. He replaced Paul Trollope with Cardiff second bottom in October 2016. “I tried to get him before but the transfer committee wanted someone else,” Dalman says. “I was always sorry because I thought he would just suit Cardiff. So I got his number and called when he was in Scotland on holiday. We met for breakfast in London the following week.
“I said ‘good morning Neil’. His first words were ‘I guess you’re here to interview me for the Cardiff job’. I said ‘not really, I’m here to offer it to you’. He said ‘you don’t want to ask me a question’? I said ‘not really . . . I know everything I need to know. Do you want the job or not?’ He shook my hand. We didn’t sign a contract, didn’t do details on salary — we had a ballpark number. I said ‘do you want me to put all this on paper and send it through today’? He said ‘nah, your word is good’ and that was it. I announced the appointment on nothing more than a handshake. A lot of my business is done on handshakes and it was nice to meet someone who’s also like that.”
