January transfer window: Cardiff City ready to pay £1million for Forest Green Rovers striker
By Jon Palmer

Championship club leading chase

Thursday 4th Jan 2018

Cardiff City are lining up a £1million swoop for Forest Green striker Christian Doidge.

The 25-year-old Welshman has scored 17 goals for a struggling Rovers side this season.

He fired 27 last term to help them win promotion to the Football League for the first time via the National League play-offs, including one in the 3-1 win over Tranmere Rovers in the final at Wembley.

Several clubs are keen to prise him away from Gloucestershire, but Championship promotion chasers Cardiff, managed by Neil Warnock, are favourites to land his signature.

Doidge joined Rovers from Dagenham & Redbridge in the summer of 2016.

The Newport-born target man was released by Southampton and Bristol Rovers as a youngster.

He stepped away from the professional game as a teenager and pursued a career with South Wales Police as well as representing the Welsh national basketball side and appearing in the European Championships.

However, he found his way back into football and his form for League of Wales Carmarthen Town earned him his move to Dagenham.

Meanwhile, Rovers have told attacking midfielder or forward Luke James and goalkeeper Sam Russell they can leave the club.

They have so far brought in Dayle Grubb (Weston-super-Mare), Alex Whittle (York City), Gavin Gunning (Port Vale) and Farrend Rawson (Derby) during this transfer window.

Striker Omar Bugiel has joined National League club Bromley on loan until the end of the season.

Alex Iacovitti (Nottingham Forest), Jack Fitzwater (West Brom), Toni Gomes (Liverpool) and Will Randall (Wolves) have all returned to their parent clubs after half season loans.

It is understood that forward Shamir Mullings is also on his way out of the New Lawn.

Is this too much of a gamble on a player who is unproven at this level? I am guessing we won't be bringing in more than a couple of players, and the pressure is going to increase as we get to the crucial stage. Would we better with players who have been there and done it before, or are all those going to be out of our price range. Tricky one.

Yes January is bad time to be wanting quality at reasonable price? In his case wasn't he quoted for £450k?

Too much of a gamble for me at this stage of the season and where we sit in the league,I know everybody deserves a chance but I think we need someone proven at this level.Although his strike rate is good look at the opposition, there no Wolves,Villa's or Derby's and with the cash these guy's are going to be spending it's a little concerning that we are looking at player's at much lower levels,Bogle and Meite proves a point.

Totally agree with you, if he does come I hope he proves me wrong but I won't be holding my breath, seems we are shopping in Poundland rather than Asda,Tesco etc. We know we won't spend stupid momey but a million for an unproven League 2 player.

The fact he played for Cwmbran Celtic tells me he is shite anyway   always done them in the League on a Saturday as a young lad in Newport and District League Y :D :D

He is Welsh though so if he does come then good luck to him
