Attendances maybe not so bad?

Sun Dec 31, 2017 6:20 pm

Discovered this interesting report on match day attendances by UEFA (pages 36-39). Championship attendances are already some of the best in Europe (average attendances are 8th, and overall 4th/higher than Serie A & Ligue 1), and our average matchday attendance is 2000 higher than the Championship average too.

So why are we lower than we used to? Whether we like it or not, people do stay away based on results. Falling 5 positions means your attendance falls by 10%, and even staying in the same position has your attendance fall. We've had 4 years of either falling or stagnating now, which almost perfectly predicts us falling from 26k/game to 19k/game.

Yes some historically big teams have kept their support better, but they've had a big support for years who are used to losing, whereas we picked up all our fans on the back of success, who aren't used to losing, which is why we didn't keep them so well after relegation - whilst we're reverting back to our years of a lower support (which we're much still higher than!).

Give us promotion to the Premier League and a season or two of success, and I'm sure all our fans will be back again! Even if they start of fair-weather, give them a few years of coming regularly, and they'll get into the habit of coming down through thick and thin!! Everyone starts somewhere :ayatollah: :thumbright:

I have been disappointed by some of our attendances this season but thought nearly 18,000 on Friday night- (well 18,000 tickets sold though I doubt if there that many there) wasn't too bad given few Preston fans, the fact it was on TV and coming on the back of a home defeat just three days previously. Not great but had it been on Saturday afternoon and not on TV it would have been over 20K.

Yep, just under 18k for Preston which is still above the Championship average, which is pretty good considering it was the Friday night before new years (sure I wasn't the only person who couldn't make it for that reason), as well as being on TV and poor recent form! :thumbright: :thumbright:

SINCE 2008/14 we've lost roughly 5k fans our average was about 22k (except premier) if you look at it subjectively we've lost 4k in St holders as average in those years was about 17/18k, walk up crowd as stayed roughly same at 4k as average crowd is now is around 18k so not bad considering 2008/14 was most successful in present history plus golden tickets & new stadium! and past 3/4 years have been rubbish in footballing terms so no surprise crowds lower.
Figures used are rough aproximation: based on quick browse of records .thumbup:

I've stopped caring how many people turn up and this isn't a dig at the OP but the whole topic is so exhausted on this board. I just enjoy the game if people wana stay at home then good for them. We're a small club some people need to get over fact.
