Neither the goalkeeper or the centre backs are encouraged to look for a short pass into midfield. None of the midfielders ever comes short for the ball when it's in the keeper's hands or when the centre halfs have the ball.
The mantra (which must come from the manager or he'd change it) is just get the ball forward as quickly as possible. It's the same at throw ins - It's always "down the line" as far as we can hoping for another throw in until we get close enough to do one of those ridiculous long throws that NEVER work. This formula is never changed or mixed up.
Little point in having a dominant midfielder if the ball is just going to be flying over his head for 90 minutes.
