Champions League side looking to sign Cardiff City star to replace Premier League linked midfielder

By Sport Witness -

Wednesday 27th December 2017

Besiktas are targeting Cardiff City’s midfielder Aron Gunnarsson to replace Premier League linked Oguzhan Ozyakup, claim Fotomac.

Fotomac say Besiktas have contacted the Cardiff City player’s agent about a possible move and were interested last season, but were put of by the two million price tag.

Ozyakup hasn’t said yes to extending his contact with the club, and Beskitas fear losing him on a free transfer next summer, with a number of Premier League sides taking an interest

The Turkish newspaper report Beskitas have identified Cardiff City’s Gunnarsson as the man to replace Ozyakup if he decides to leave the club at the end of the season.

Besiktas manager Senol Gunes is reportedly a big fan of the hard working midfielder, after he impressed him during Turkey’s matches against Iceland in the World Cup Qualifiers.

Fotomac say Besiktas have contacted the Cardiff City player’s agent about a possible move, but the Turkish club will not make an offer until they know for certain Ozyakup will be leaving

If Ozyakup decides to leave the club then there’s every chance Besiktas will target the Cardiff City captain, and Fotomac believe he’s interested in a move to the Turkish champions.

Gunnarsson has played 12 games for Cardiff City this season and his contract with the Bluebirds will expire at the end of the season.

Love Gunnar but if we could get a million would part company and wish him well, he's given us everything.

seriously dont get this train of thought. and how much to replace .? and will the replacement fit.?
im a fan not an accountant so i want to keep our best players
but doubt youd find an accountant that would think selling someone who has been of such value while chasing the most lucrative prize in club football makes any sense whatsoever.

I respect your opinion, am not sure if mine is even right and if he was fit right now I would no doubt have a different one but he's not fit is out for 6 weeks, will get nothing in the summer and while I love Gunnar he can be replaced. In fact he's not featured much and we are joint second. Our best three is ralls Gunnar and loic.

At least the price is going up now! LOL

Personally, I'd keep him (the rewards could be worth a lot more) unless he asks for a move, as I think we've seen how valuable he can be to the team in recent games and we already know he is a good 'fit' :ayatollah:

Re: ONE OF CARDIFF CITY'S MAIN STARS COULD BE ON HIS WAY OUT

It’s a tough one really -
On one hand he doesn’t seem willing to sign a new deal and if there’s interest on that basis surely we sell??

On the other he’s the most combative midfielder we have he knows the club and the fans but IF we got promoted would he start a lot or even make an impact!

I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer in this scenario damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

You’d like to see abitnof loyalty from both parties but does football still work like that? Has it ever?

the replaced bit is what bothers me....of course there are better or as good out there but for how much?
as it stands we have a good player we have to pay until the end of the season ..a long term replacement is likely to cost more than we get for Gunner and will want us to commit to a 3 year deal..or a loan signing who could well cost a loan fee plus decent wages will be comming here because he isnt exactly setting the world on fire where he is and might not fit { seen enough players not work out this last few years } to me if he is fit..he plays...so why sell.
besides with a world cup 6 months away he would be mental to be grabbing the 1st offer that comes his was unless its silly money.

All this conjecture will come down to one thing. Money.
Gunnar will stay till the summer as any signing on fee as a free agent will dwarf a paid for move for him personally. Would you for go the million or half a million any club would pay us just because......nah niether will he.

Totally agree. Surely his absence has shown how much we miss him

A fit Gunnarsson is one of our star players and even Warnock said Gunnarsson was the backbone of our team.

We miss him badly, players like Gunnarsson could be just the difference of us getting automatic promotion or struggling to make the play-offs.

Re: ONE OF CARDIFF CITY'S MAIN STARS COULD BE ON HIS WAY OUT

It all depends on warnock. He said he'd like to buy one of his targets, if he's a replacement for gunnar then sell otherwise save him for the run in. At least the club are asking for 2m even if he is in last 6 months of contract.

Why Cardiff City badly need to sign a dominant midfielder to realise their Premier League dream in 2018.

Paul Abdanatoa

Thursday 28th December 2017

Cardiff City have dipped out of the top two. On goal difference. Cue a kind of panic for some.

Such is football. That is what happens when you raise expectation levels to the degree Neil Warnock has done with these Bluebirds and losing back to back matches is certainly new territory for him and the fans this season.

But while Xmas defeats to Bolton and Fulham were desperately disappointing, Warnock is correct to put them into perspective in the context of the season as a whole.

His Bluebirds have had a magnificent first half to the 2017-18 campaign, punching above their weight and reaching levels not too many anticipated before the first ball was kicked back in August.

Most would have accepted a top six finish this season. The reality is Cardiff head towards the new year with genuine aspirations of being in the top two when the Premier League promotion spots are determined in May.

Preston, on Friday night, is the perfect moment to return to winning ways, but the losses to Bolton and in particular Fulham come at an opportune time because they underline the main area in which Cardiff are lacking.

Namely midfield, where Tom Cairney and Stefan Johansen ran the show and demonstrated the very dominance and silky class Cardiff don't have in that area of the pitch.

Hence the reason Warnock is targeting a bossy, dominant experienced midfield man in the January transfer window. A been there, seen it and worn the promotion t-shirt merchant who is ready to step down from the Premier League to help drive the Bluebirds back into it.

In front of the watching Vincent Tan, Cardiff v Fulham presented Warnock with an irrefutable case for a release of the January purse strings. The new midfielder, a man capable of taking matches by the scruff of the neck when the going gets tough and the pressure becomes intense, could be the difference between Tan's Bluebirds going up or not.

Fulham's Tom Cairney ran the show, Cardiff need that type of midfielder (Image: Huw Evans Picture Agency)
Of course, who the individual Warnock is targeting actually is remains a closely-guarded secret between him and the Bluebirds hierarchy.

But it will be someone who can play equally effective as an 8 or a 10. Either directly next to one of Aron Gunnarsson or Joe Ralls, with Lee Tomlin or Loic Damour in front, or with the Bluebirds' first pick midfield pairing this season.

Cardiff City legend and WalesOnline columnist Nathan Blake says Warnock should go after Newcastle's Mohamed Diame.

He certainly fits the bill of the kind of figure Warnock requires. Strong, aggressive, good on the ball, creative, can score goals.

Diame has also been here before, having helped drive Newcastle over the promotion line last season.

He didn't feature much at the beginning of the current Premier League campaign, afforded the odd cameo appearance here and there, but Rafa Benitez has started Diame in recent matches so it seems the Bluebirds will need to look elsewhere.

It will be that kind of character, though. A midfield stalwart accustomed to being in a winning Championship dressing room, but who doesn't feature regularly for his club at Premier League level and wants week in, week out action again.

Expect a deal to be done pretty quickly, too. Warnock won't want to hang around on this one because Fulham demonstrated the urgency of it from Cardiff's perspective.

Bluebirds fans who fondly recall the Eddie May era will remember that side won the old Third Division title with skipper Paul Ramsey providing the dynamism from midfield.

It is a Ramsey-type figure Warnock requires 25 years on, albeit one with far greater quality at a much higher level, of course.

Cardiff have had a great start, but a new spark in January always helps. Junior Hoilett and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing have gone quiet on the wings, the defence has begun creaking, Kenneth Zohore has to get up to match fitness again. The Lee Tomlin situation seems to get more mystifying by the day. We don't know when the blockbusting Gunnarsson will return.

And suddenly Derby and Leeds, who each have real quality in their sides, have crept close to Cardiff's coat tails. Middlesbrough will become a force with Tony Pulis at the helm, Aston Villa are too good not to make the top six. So too Fulham, on the evidence of Boxing Day.

Wolves are clear at the top, Bristol City have gone second, Sheffield United refuse to disappear.

There are nine clubs there with genuine hopes of finishing in the play-off places at least, let alone the top two.

Thanks to Warnock's masterful management throughout 2017, Cardiff are also firmly in the mix. To get over the promotion line, the need for that dynamic and dominant new midfielder has become even more pressing.

The key to this is whether we have a replacemet in mind that is as as good as, or preferably better, than Gunnarsson.

As long we have that calibre of placement I think he can go, the sooner the better for both parties. He has been important but he's missed an awful lot of football (more than half the available games over the last 2 1/2 seasons) and therefore we may be better getting someone in who can play more often.

Re: ONE OF CARDIFF CITY'S MAIN STARS COULD BE ON HIS WAY OUT

Thu Dec 28, 2017 8:51 am

I think he’s made it clear that he doesn’t want to be here but unless a big offer comes in that suits him personally, I don’t think he’ll be going in January.
For me, there’s much better out there come the summer. Decent player but can’t pass water.

He wants to go so let him go and get money for him rather than nothing at the end of the season. He said he may stay if we go up but he will be replaced if we go up for sure. The cheek of it.

Let's get better in now

Correct! I hope he stays because we badly need him back and with a quality creative midfielder to support him we could do better than the playoffs.

he didn't cut it last time we was in the prem, so what would make him think he could now?
Personally i would want better than him anyway if we went up, great in this league though.

we can accept a bid, but ultimately it is gunnarsson that will decide what happens. he has the right to discuss an end of season transfer with foreign clubs from january onwards, so there's no reason for him to go now.

We would not get a million for him this latenin his contract and he is worth MORE than a million to us just for half a season.

It's a no brainer he could take us up.

That's right, Gunnar wont sign a new contract. Get rid and get some money and a better player in. Remember Ledley and how we messed that up.

Lessons learned now.

you mean like hoilett ,Harris and and manga last year.
as for Ledley i doubt we would have accepted a one million pound bid at this point in his contract with us doing well..its insanity .
