Tony Pulis Apponted manager of Middlesborough

'I WANTED A CHALLENGE'

One month on after being sacked by West Brom, Pulis is now in charge of Sky Bet Championship outfit Middlesbrough, and the Welshman is looking forward to managing a club which reminds him of his time at Stoke.

As quoted on the club's website, Pulis said: "I wanted a challenge - a real challenge - and this reminds me so much of Stoke when I went there with Peter Coates. Steve Gibson is a football man who understands the game. I have great respect for him as a person and an owner.

"I really am looking forward to this. The immediate challenge is finding out about the football club and as a team we have to get as many points as can, as quickly as we can.

"I wanted to come at this time because we have so many games in a short space of time, and I can assess everything."

The 59-year-old will watch the Boxing Day game against Bolton Wanderers from the Riverside stands.

The Welshman brings a wealth of experience to the club, having managed in the Premier League for the last decade with Stoke City, Crystal Palace, and West Bromwich Albion.

He has managed more than 1,000 games and has not only won promotion to the top flight, but has also reached an FA Cup final, and guided Stoke into the Europa League.

Boro chairman Steve Gibson said: “We’re delighted to appoint Tony as our new manager. His experience and knowledge speaks for itself and he has a tremendous track record.

“We’re excited by this appointment and by what Tony can bring to this football club. There was strong interest from two other clubs, and we’re delighted Tony has decided to join us.

“There’s no disguising that 2017 has not been a happy year for any of us, but we’ve refocused and we’re looking forward to the future.”

The club’s new manager said: “I wanted a challenge - a real challenge - and this reminds me so much of Stoke when I went there with Peter Coates. Steve Gibson is a football man who understands the game. I have great respect for him as a person and an owner.

I did not see it as a surprise either Chris but you’re right it is a great appointment.
Managers like Pullis, Warnock and Allardyce improve teams and get them points whether it’s at the bottom to avoid relegation or towards the top and get promotion.
I’m just glad he didn’t go to the jack bastards and kept them up.

Paul, he obviously didn't want that big a challenge (Swansea)! LOL :laughing6: :thumbright:

I thought it was a surprise because I thought he (Pulis) would hang on to get a Premier League or the wales job. His ability (like that of Allerdyce) is undoubted, as he has sustained clubs in the top League for so many years :ayatollah:

He's gone to boro because no premiership jobs available or likely to be available in near future that would suit him! Swansea is a lost course and even he wouldn't save them. :old:

Personally, I think he would. They’re not far off safety and certainly not adrift.
Still, I’ll be happy if the little midge Britton stays in charge.

What people forget is whilst only 5pnts or whatever from safety yes they need 2 wins but what about other teams? They'll all need to lose 2 games for swans to overtake them! At moment can't see swans getting 2 wins take look at their attacking stats all are worst in premier! Pulis reputation is on defence well that's not their main problem that's why don't think pulis would've help them. :old:
