Middlesbrough have sacked Garry Monk

REPORT:

Garry Monk's Middlesbrough sacking was done Southgate style to avoid a Strachan-like collapse
By Anthony Vickers

Garry Monk's exit may seem harsh following a win, but there is little room for sentiment, writes Anthony Vickers

Garry Monk has suffered a Southgate-like sacking for posting Strachan-like results and the manner of Garry Monk ’s ruthless late night axe was an echo of Gareth Southgate.

But the football that sharpened the blade and put his head on the bloke was more reminiscent of Gordon Strachan.

To be sacked after a welcome win - and at Christmas - may seem harsh but football is a cruel business with little room for sentiment.

Monk had described the 2-1 victory at Hillsborough as Boro ’s ‘best away display of the season’ yet the team stumbled through a chaotic first half before mounting a spirited if scrappy second half revival to come from behind.

There was little in the performance to suggest Boro had the ability to beat better sides, the ones above them, and less still to hint at sustained upward progress into the play-off pack.

In that sense there was a touch of the Southgate sacking about it. Then, in October 2009, chairman Steve Gibson decided that while Boro were still very much in touch with the promotion places they did not have the steel or spirit to match their rivals. A comprehensive 5-0 demolition at home to rivals West Brom made his mind up on that score.

And the hard-nosed owner had already been sounding out potential replacements with Strachan in the frame.

Once the dye was cast a final flourish and a 2-0 home win over Derby did nothing to stave off the inevitable and after giving his press conference Southgate was invited up to the boardroom and handed the pearl handed revolver.

Monk doesn’t have the mitigation that Southgate had, that he was within a win of the top. The seven-month reign of the former Swansea and Leeds boss feels far more like the stunted stint under Strachan.

After taking over from Southgate Strachan’s first semi-season was an exercise in treading water while he tried to toughen up a soft-centred side and beef it up with ‘men’, and preferable Scottish men. But he went into his season having been given a massive budget and a free hand to recruit players that fitted his style.

Strachan started the season as favourites and with high expectations from fans and from the boardroom. And as with Monk, the side failed to ignite, spluttering through erratic early displays before tailing off badly into aimless, impotent flailing. Strachan’s Boro were plodding, predictable and impotent. They laboured through lack-lustre games with a soul-sapping slo-mo style that was easily stifled by even average opponents, especially away from home.

Morale drained away, on the pitch and in the stands. Crowds and belief evaporated. The team had a shape but little spirit and failed to play in any consistent or coherent way. And the boss failed to build a relationship with the fans - indeed, he didn’t even try - and there was no pool of good will when results got rock and the chairman was quick to act.

How it unravelled

Monk has found that for all his reputation as a loyal and supportive chairman, Steve Gibson can also be ruthless. The chairman will be well aware of the dissent growing in the crowd, the rumbles within the camp and the stark reality of results and the tables is hard to avoid.

He has made a massive investment in Monk’s squad and the results have been woefully inadequate.

Something had to be done. Monk has been axed in a Southgate style to prevent the season going Strachan-shaped.

Garry Monk backed by bookies to return as Swansea City manager after Middlesbrough sacking
By Mathew Davies

Former Liberty boss is now second favourite for the role after his dismissal from the Riverside

Former Swansea City boss Garry Monk has been sacked by Middlesbrough - and has immediately been placed in the running for the vacant Liberty Stadium post.

Monk has been dismissed from his job at the Riverside despite Saturday's 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday and with the club in ninth place - three points outside the play-off spots.

But there has been disharmony at the Teesside club over the past few months, with fans unhappy with the style of play and Boro's inconsistent displays.

Despite that, he is priced as 3-1 with BetVictor to return to Swansea, behind favourite Frank de Boer.

Monk guided Swansea to their highest Premier League finish ever - eighth place - in 2015, before being sacked before the halfway point the following season.

Swansea chiefs parted company with Paul Clement on Wednesday evening after a poor start to this campaign.

Leon Britton was put in caretaker charge for today's 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.

And WalesOnline have also reported that another former Swans boss, Roberto Martinez, has been sounded out over the Liberty hotseat.

Britton is likely to remain in charge for Swansea's Boxing Day trip to Anfield to face Liverpool.
