" Winter Break In Football - For Or Against ? "
Just been having a conversation with Annis on another thread re winter breaks in football - currently Spain is having a four week break. We both agree they are good but It is at the wrong time. I am a traditionalist and football over the Christmas period must stay - there is nothing like going to matches around Christmas and they have normally the biggest attendances.
I have always been in favour of a winter break in the UK but for me it has to be at the right time.
I would have the break straight after the third round of the fa cup and start it back with the fourth round of the fa cup. I would also make sure that top sides could not go and play lucrative friendlies !

Dobbins,
Winter Breaks, I think they are good but I believe December is the wrong month which is what is what they do over here in Spain, even over here they want to be watching football during their holiday period.
I would chose January as its the quetiest month everywhere and usually the coldest month.
I would do what they do here, play football till part of June and the crowds seem to increase in May & June due to the weather

Xmas is massive regarding football and it should stay, but the month of January I would break it

Mixed feelings
Great if you can buy players before so that they gel with squad .
Good for injured players but kills momentum of successful teams

No chance! It’s tradition here and many people, including myself would be totally lost without festive football!
It’s also a very important time of year, the promotion race hots up around this time of year. I’d be gutted for a winter break. It could be bad for momentum also.

I agree with this.
I love the English League tradition of football over Christmas and the new year.
But I also think a mid-season break would be good, so January seems ideal when the weather is at its worst and people are still skint after Christmas.

100% agree Dec is massive for Xmas including New Year's Day
But January is a month when it's ice cold and every excuse once again made why City fans don't go, but saying that we have had that all through December
So let's hope No excuses in Jan, we have had Aug hols, Sept still not believing, Oct to cold , Nov saving for Xmas and Dec Xmas parties and shopping.
Let's hope Jan they will finally turn up

Both our home Xmas games and New Years Day away should all be near sell outs

Scott, I agree January perfect for a break

January would be the best month.
Maybe stopping the league and have a month of cup games instead of loads of annoying midweek fixtures. Playing fringe players whilst the window open would give people a chance to scout players out of favour.

Only if strict regulation on no travelling outside Europe for freindlies? Break is to rest players from busy schedule not for money making trips to Asia!

dont see a need myself..
i presume it wouldnt include new years day.. which leaves 3 league games and possibly only 2 should ourselves or Bolton reach the 4th round of the FA cup.
would much prefer they reduce the division back to its original 22 teams taking out 2 stupid midweek games at places like Preston and Barnsley.

For
The Winter break should be mid-January to mid - June taking the season up to the end of May.
In fact I would consider extending the season into June even by extending the winter break or spreading the games out.
The drawback being what would we do during the winter break as fans. I hate the summer break so a break in the winter could make it a long cold one.

Against. Only places that should have a winter break are places like Ukraine where the weather has a negative influence on games.
