Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock identifies dominant midfielder as number one January transfer target

Warnock still targeting a striker, most likely on loan, to provide cover while Zohore and Danny Ward are sidelined.

With Warnock limited with the amount of funds he has available, Warnock will be looking for mainly loans and free agents.

' NEIL WARNOCK IDENTIFIES HIS PRIORITY SIGNING '

Wednesday 20th December 2017

Neil Warnock will prioritise a dominant and experienced midfielder as his No.1 Cardiff City transfer target next month.

It is understood the Bluebirds boss is looking for a battle-hardened figure with promotion experience to get his side over the line in the second half of the season.

With injuries to key midfielders Aron Gunnarsson and Craig Bryson leaving Cardiff short of numbers, Warnock wants to bolster the midfield more than any other area.

He has previously stated a striker was his main January priority, but with Kenneth Zohore about to regain fitness Warnock is looking at midfield options.

It is thought he wants someone in the mould of Alejandro Faurlin or Shaun Derry — the midfield linchpins who formed the base of Warnock's promotion-winning Queens Park Rangers side in 2010-11.

He could get someone with Premier League experience on loan, or look to make a permanent signing with Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan ready to release the purse strings.

With Gunnarsson braced to depart at the end of the season and a few doubts over Bryson's fitness after an Achilles injury, Warnock believes central midfield is the one area in which his squad could be improved.

Joe Ralls has been impressive this season, but Warnock feels the 24-year-old needs someone to play beside.

The Bluebirds are still targeting a striker, most likely on loan, to provide cover while Zohore and Danny Ward are sidelined.

I do wonder whether they are preparing to sell Gunnarsson in January.

He won't sign a new contract to play in the Championship and many would question whether he's good enough to play in the Prem if we did go up (I don't think he is).

The injury is a strange one and I bet Warnock is none too happy about the way he seemed to play for Iceland despite being out for us. The problem is, if he does still have an injury we won't have many takers.

We definitely need an "enforcer" in midfield and Gunnarsson could do that for us at his best in the Championship. But at the moment he seems to miss an awful lot of games and that's not something that we need going into the second half of the season.

Perhaps it's time for the club to bite the bullet and replace with a bit of quality and experience to get us through those tough battles that will, inevitably, come in the New Year.

Ok soooo a long shot, but how about James McArthur at Palace?

Out of contract next summer, only started 7 games this year although has been getting minutes under Sir Roy Hodgson and started last game, but think Roy will be making his own signings in Jan.

Also....isn't his agent Willy McKay?

Hmmmmmmm

I heard Jordan Mutch pretty much run the show in midfield for Palace last week when their 2nd string played ours?

He clearly seems hungry - so could be worth a loan with a view to a permanent signing?

Could be a good Championship loan shout, Paul but not sure I'd want him back for a Premier League season. He was one of our better but not consistent performers (in a team that disintegrated under the pressure of 'Malkygate' and what surrounded the club at that time) and hasn't really done overly well in that Division since he departed the CCS :thumbright:

I do agree with that. I think we need something much (pardon the pun!) stronger when we get promoted. But I think he would do an excellent job for the next few months.

Get him here on loan. Nice salary. Give him a nice "Promotion Bonus" - Give him something to aim for.

Think NW has already done his deals barring any last minute complications.

As far as Gunner is concerned if we do sign a midfield general he'll either go or be a bit part player imo.

In fairness to NW he does not allow players to dictate to him or the club.

I can see at least 3 coming in, midfielder, winger and a striker.

Who wouldn't want to come to us at the moment.

Derby have a class dominant midfielder who has been awesome for them. Turned their performances around since they signed him and made them much more solid although their pacy wingers and other midfielders to get forward much like he does for Wales.

If only Derby would sell him.

Well he's been injured pretty much his whole career so don't see why he would stay fit. For that reason a definite no for me.

And that is the problem with Mutch. Poor injury record.

We need a CM who will put in the minutes between Jan and end of season.

Is there anyone of note in league 1?

Billy Bodin (15 games 8 goals), David Meyler (18 games 3 goals), Marlon Pack(similar player to gunnarsson), Ryan Leonard (won player of the year 3 years in a row for southend in league 1), Erhun Oztumer,(8 goals in 19 games, check his stats out on wiki) Kenny McLean (Scotland international, 4 goals in 25 games, similar to Whittingham). All players who play CM and are available for free in 6 months and would be half price in jan.

Basically Warnock has been reading my posts on here . I did say a good while back that a dominant midfielder should be a priority! Adam anyone?

It's a pretty obvious weakness in our team. We have no out and out defensive midfielders, and the closest thing we have to one (Gunnar) is leaving at the end of the season.

I wouldn’t go for Mutch- he’s not a dominant midfielder more forward thinking, and at this level Tomlin is better at that role.

As others say he is far too injury prone.
