' Two Leeds United Players at Cardiff City on Trial '

Mon Dec 18, 2017 5:05 pm

Cardiff City have taken Leeds United duo Jack and Paul McKay on trial with the idea of bringing the twins into the U23 setup.

Football League

Monday 18th December 2017

The 21-year old’s are the sons of football agent Willie McKay and joined Leeds from fellow Yorkshire club Doncaster Rovers in 2016 although they have struggled for any senior football at Elland Road.

Neil Warnock is keen to change the way the development squad currently operates with very few Cardiff players emerging from within the ranks over recent years.

Paul, a centre-back did make one appearance, in the FA Cup against Sutton however his brother Jack had to go out on loan to Airdrieonians last season in search of football.

Cardiff City have taken the pair on trial with a view to bringing them into a revamped under 23 team.

The experienced manager wants to create a younger and more competitive group which is run by Jarred Harvey and Andy Legg. The McKay twins are a number of trialists who will be given a chance in upcoming games in order to earn a move.

The Verdict

It seems as though a move would benefit the players given that Leeds are allowing them to go on trial, which suggests they don’t see a route to the first-team for either player.

For Cardiff, it’s good that Warnock has identified a problem with the U23s and fans will be pleased that they are trying to do something about it.

The club are in no position to throw lots of money at bringing players in, so new players must come through the development side, now it’s down the McKay twins to prove they deserve a chance with the Welsh club.

We'd be far better off pushing younger Welsh players through then bringing in guys not viewed good enough elsewhere.

I agree, id rather see young welsh players pushed than have 2 twenty one year olds deemed not good enough for Leeds Academy take up a spot in out under 23s. I'm sorry but if their not good enough for Leeds at 21 then I don't see them making it here.

Just like Sol Bamba was not good enough for Leeds so why should we take him. How many people would send him back now. NONE - EXACTLY

Football is all about opinions.

The twins may turn out to be crap but they maybe brilliant also - Give everyone a fair chance and then decide.

Just don't agree with it at a youth level. Shows very little faith in our current system to be bringing in two 21 year olds. Our young Welsh players will never be good enough if they're not given a chance because of parachuting players in.

There is a multitude of reasons things didn't work out at Leeds. Many a top player got told they wernt good enough at a young age only to make to the top. So that mentality is bollocks.

Leeds United: Whites twins link up with former boss Warnock at Cardiff City

Monday 18 December 2017

Leeds United have released academy youngsters Paul and Jack McKay after two years on the books at Elland Road.

The twins agreed to sever their contracts six months early by mutual consent and began a trial at Cardiff City by featuring for the Welsh club’s Under-23s yesterday.

Jack McKay The McKays – the sons of football agent Willie McKay – were signed by Leeds from Doncaster Rovers in January 2016 as part of an attempt by United to increase a dwindling pool of development-squad players.

Striker Jack failed to make a senior appearance for Leeds and spent time on loan at Scottish lower league club Airdrie last season. Centre-back McKay played once in an FA Cup fourth-round defeat to non-league Sutton United last January but has not featured since.

The 21-year-olds played regularly for Leeds’ Under-23s this season but both were due to reach the end of their deals after the conclusion of this season and were likely to be released.

They were used by Cardiff – managed by former Whites boss Neil Warnock – in a 3-3 draw against Charlton Athletic’s development squad this afternoon.

So we don't look for other players but keep the players we got now and hope they make it eventually? Our present problem is because we held onto players not good enough for to long! What happens when our current crop are all used close down under 23s?

Yes, I think bringing in a first teamer to strengthen the squad for a promotion push is a must, regardless of nationality etc.. but at youth level I agree that we should be concentrating closer to home and investing in some of the youngsters we have already.

I wonder if we should revisit getting a reserve team in the Welsh League. That would be a great way of supporting the Welsh System (and improving the quality) and getting players playing competitive games. I worry about the current U23 and reserve system we have. We have seen some good players performing well but never breaking through... either the system is broken or the transition to first team coaching has been appalling. Either way, love to see some of our youngsters given more of a competitive chance.
