“ Sacked politician found dead “

BBC

Tuesday 7th November 2017

An ex-Welsh Labour minister who faced a party investigation into allegations about his personal conduct has taken his own life, BBC Wales understands.

Alyn and Deeside AM Carl Sargeant, 49, lost his ministerial job as cabinet secretary for communities and children last Friday.

A family statement said they were "devastated beyond words" at the loss of "the glue that bound us together".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the death was "deeply shocking news".

Mr Sargeant was married and had two children. The Welsh Assembly's business for Tuesday has been cancelled as a mark of respect.

He was sacked from his Welsh Government job last Friday after allegations about his behaviour were passed to First Minister Carwyn Jones's office.

Mr Jones had said on Monday that he had heard of a number of alleged incidents with women, and felt he had no choice but to refer the matter to the party.

Paying tribute, Mr Jones said: "Carl was a friend as well as a colleague and I am shocked and deeply saddened by his death.

"He made a big contribution to Welsh public life and fought tirelessly for those he represented both as a minister and as a local assembly member.

"He will be a great loss both to our party and to the Senedd."

Welsh Secretary Alun Cairns said he was "shocked and saddened" by the news, adding: "My heart goes out to his family, friends and colleagues."

Tributes were paid across the assembly on Tuesday.

Elin Jones, assembly presiding officer, said Mr Sargeant "served the people of Alyn and Deeside with pride and determination" and that he had made an "enormous contribution to the development of this democratic institution".

"On behalf of all the members and those who work at the National Assembly for Wales, I would like to express my deepest sympathy to his family and colleagues," she added.

Welsh Conservative leader Andrew RT Davies said: "Our Parliament has lost a stalwart and many of us have lost a friend.”

Plaid Cymru Leader Leanne Wood said: "Carl Sargeant made a significant contribution to Welsh politics, both as an assembly member and a government minister."

North Wales Police Supt Mark Pierce said police were called at about 11:30 GMT on Tuesday to a report that a man's body had been found at an address in Connah's Quay, Flintshire.

"The man has been formally identified as local AM Carl Sargeant. His next of kin have been informed and police are supporting the family," he said.

"North Wales Police are not treating his death as suspicious and the matter has been referred to HM Coroner."

Carwyn Jones is a hypocrite.
Sacked him Friday, stuck a knife in his back yesterday, now full of praise for him today.

Very sad. The unintended consequences of these trial by social media witch hunts. Something needs to be done to stop these public floggings before any evidence has even been heard. We probably won’t know if he was guilty or innocent but his children no longer have a father.

Totally agree, witch hunts and some of them for things which were not that bad in the big wide world years ago.

They should concentrate on the real problems that are today happening which are far far worse than some of the stuff they are going on about.

How is he being a hypocrite ?

All of that is fact. Including the friendship part as they had a very close alliance within the Assembly which was well known.

Just because he had to refer some accusations for further, independent, investigation doesn't mean he believed or supported them and even if he did it doesn't mean any of what he said above is untrue or hypocritical  Indeed, he was very respectful in not even mentioning those accusations.

In his position he cannot comment on the rights or wrongs of incidents until full investigation. If you don't like the First Minister fine, but to call him a hypocrite in these circumstances is a bit over the top and just using a sad incident to have an umerited pop.

Politics aside, very sad news for someone 49 years of age to have been that desperate to take this course of action. Condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

I think you'll see Carwyn Jones stand down probably using the word 'retire' in the not too distant future ;)

People who know him often say how shocked they are at achieving such a lofty position, although he can obviously talk the talk even when anyone listening knows it is just empty rhetoric!

I'm not a fan of the Welsh Assembly and I don't know if Carl Sergeant was guilty or not of the allegations (that's what they were at that point and still remain) but this is sad regardless and I feel for his family who now have the toughest times of all ahead no matter what the truth! :(

Totally agree. He was so anti Jeremy Corbyn before the election now he can't wait to be seen by his side at every opportunity

I used to work at the assembly and in my dealings with Carl found him to be a likeable guy who took the time to listen and talk to even the most junior of staff. Really sad situation

That’s my issue with him. He was totally embarrassed by Corbyn before the election but now always wants to be seen with him - as you say.

He’s one of many though.

Would you normally sack somebody because it has been alleged that he did something wrong. I have no idea what he is supposed to have done, but are'nt you presumed innocent until someone can prove otherwise.

no i wouldnt.....but im not in that position......if Carwyn Jones has been informed that there were serious allegations...did nothing and 6 months or a year later it emerges that the allegations were now serious crimes that he knew about..all hell would break out.
Carl Sargeant tweeted....given the nature of the allegations I agreed with the First Minister that it was right that i stand aside from the cabinet today......you cant really argue with that.

Why are we surprised? This poor bloke who was genuinely liked and seemed to be a rare beast because he actually cared for people. He was hung ,drawn and quartered before being allowed to defend himself. Are they now going to name the accusers ???? I think not ! Carwyn Jones is weak bag of cold piss and should walk. He epitomizes the majority of clowns who occupy this wasteful and unnecessary building down the Bay. They are indeed the " Mafia of the mediocre"
