Mario Cassama, 18, was said in court to be a player for Cardiff City's academy side

A promising young footballer who robbed three people in the street has been hauled back before a court over his “deplorable” unpaid work efforts.

Teenager Mario Cassama, who was said to be “on the brink” of signing a full contract with Cardiff City, was handed a suspended sentence of 27 weeks on February 28 for a series of three street robberies and was ordered to carry out community service.

Judge Jeremy Jenkins said the standard of 18-year-old Cassama’s unpaid work was “deplorable” and told him not to throw away a “promising” football career.

Judge Jenkins said: “On February 28 you were sentenced to 27 weeks suspended for 24 months with added requirements of rehabilitation of 40 days and 200 hours of unpaid work and a curfew.

“You are in breach of that order and I can now revoke that order and send you into detention.

“Let me tell you this, if I had made this order, I [make] a promise to the people that I deal with and I tell them that if they breach the order they will come back before me and I will revoke the order.

“If you come back before me you will go into custody – do you understand that? I do not give second chances.”

Locked Up in Wales October 2017

Judge Jenkins gave Cassama, of Lansdowne Road, Canton, Cardiff, an additional 25 hours community service at a hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Wednesday.

Cassama, who had no legal representation, also has to complete 40 hours of rehabilitation activity – some of which he has already completed.

Judge Jenkins said: “If you come back before me that will ruin a very promising potential football career. Do not throw it away – take the opportunity.”

The court heard Cassama has already completed more than 35 hours of his community service.

Prosecutor Karl Williams said: “He’s a young man given a sentence in respect of three street robberies.”

He added: “He’s with the Cardiff City Football academy.

“He would appear now to be on the brink of signing full-time terms.”

Mr Williams said the robberies were carried out with three others and that one breach of the order was because Cassama had to look after his two-year-old sibling.

Cassama was not ordered to pay any costs.

Following the case a Cardiff City spokesman said Cassama “was not and had never been” affiliated to the club’s academy and any suggestion of him being close to a professional contract with the club was "incorrect".

Cassama’s name is listed in the C Squad on the Cardiff City page of the EFL Trust Futsal and Education Programme website, which is an education programme for young people who wish to work in sport.

I thought I hadn't seen his name mentioned in the CCFC Academy system. The kind d is obviously delusional, claiming to be involved in it and on the verge of a professional contract. Surely telling lies about this is contempt of court at least or perjury

Wow only street robbery for three normal working citizens and he gets such a harsh sentence fancy having to pick up litter for a couple of hours !!!

Good job he didn't do anything really serious, like throw a traffic cone at someone, he would have got years

A very misleading title to this thread

The boy has played in 5 a-side community games, where clubs are a big step removed from the goings on - nothing like a budding professional in our academy he claims to be.

I've got pissed in the players lounge and boardroom areas once

Am I now on the CCFC management board???

Not as bad as street robbery though, and all he had to do was community service, that's a joke !!!

They are different crimes. I bet there were more people traumatised by the morons acting up at Chelsea. However the robbing is a horrific crime.

Definitely. Does a complaint need to be made for that to happen? I have seen that in the past.
