Neil Warnock revealed Joe Bennett was withdrawn as a precaution against Millwall but delivered a positive verdict after Callum Paterson's first home appearance for Cardiff City.

Bennett hobbled off after 37 minutes with a calf injury and was replaced by new summer signing Paterson.

It was the first chance for Bluebirds fans to get their a glimpse of the former Hearts full-back, as Lee Peltier switched to left wing-back after his introduction.

And though Bennett's injury remains a concern, many fans were impressed with Paterson's impact off the bench.

On Bennett, Warnock said: "He felt his calf tighten up, he didn't feel it pull but he felt it tighten so he came off as a precaution really.

"But I actually thought we did well with Paterson, for his first game he was a big plus today.

"He's got that's under his belt now, he's physical, and he knows what it's about and I thought Peltier was good. He didn't suffer fools, he was tackling — which I like against a team like that."

Warnock conceded that Cardiff didn't do enough to win the game and was keen to look forward to the Bluebirds' home clash with Ipswich Town on Tuesday night.

It remains to be seen whether Bennett will be fit for that encounter, with Kenneth Zohore and Aron Gunnarsson also fighting to recover in time to face Mick McCarthy's men.

If we're going to play wingbacks it's gotta be Joe and Callum. I know Warnock rates Peltier but he offers nothing going forward.

Not sure wingbacks and 2 wingers in the same team is ever going to work!!!

Prefer it if we went to a flat back four...one or two defensive midfielders would allow Patterson and Bennett to get forward at every opportunity..

Also totally agree Pelts has many good qualities and is a decent defender..he's certainly no wing back though

Don’t forget we’ve got Jazz in the ranks who was in very good form prior to injury

Got a lot of time for pelts, and perfect for a dogged performance but not a wing back. Having said that we now have some fantastic full back options when all fit.

We have 3 excellent full backs at the club and one complete tosser. Fans claim that Peltier is a dogged defender but every week all I see is a player constantly caught out of position and too easily beaten by the opposition winger he is up against. Also add in he offers nothing going forward.

I simply don't understand what NW sees in him, that said Richards, Bennett and now Paterson offer real quality in the full back positions.

No need to call him a tosser really is there? He always gives 100% in a city shirt so Just shows how much of a tosser you are really doesn't it.
