Why Lee Tomlin’s goal for Cardiff did not count against Millwall

Tomlin himself thought it was a legal goal. As did some Cardiff fans at the match.

And, a host of pundits and supporters have claimed it was a legal goal.

Except it wasn’t.

Since the overhaul of the football Laws in 1997, this move has been completely outlawed.

The goalkeeper only makes the ball playable again when throwing the ball up, if the ball touches the ground.

When it is thrown up in this manner, and is actually in the air, it is as if the goalkeeper is carrying the ball.

Any attempt to kick the ball when it is thrown up like this, should result in a caution.

So kudos to referee Steve Martin for implementing the rules perfectly here!

I see, I thought it was legal, as I was at Chelsea game when same thing happened to Marshall, but goal was allowed.

I think as soon as the ball is bounced its classed as In play

Did you not read the article above!? I don't see what people are finding so hard.

The ball didn't bounce here - no goal.

Marshal bounced the ball - goal.

That's my understanding... no need to bounce the ball but have to release the ball to kick it.
no brainer really although I have seen Tomlin type of goal given before.

Rules state no goal. :thumbright:

One of the few things, the referee actually got right in the day!

No the ref got the Marshall one wrong. They spoke about it on March of the day.
