Furious Neil Warnock accuses 'consistently poor' referee of 'playing opposites' during Cardiff City stalemate

Sunday 29th October 2017

Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock has accused referee Stephen Martin of "playing opposites" during his side's 0-0 draw with Millwall, and has dismissed suggestions that Sean Morrison has admitted to guilt after the visitors were controversially denied a second-half penalty.

The Bluebirds boss was left fuming at a number of decisions during what was a frustrating afternoon for the hosts, who struggled to break down a dogged Lions side for much of the afternoon.

Martin's decision not to award captain Morrison a penalty deep into the second half was perhaps the most notable source of ire at the Cardiff City Stadium, causing Martin to leave the field to a cascade of boos from the home fans

And Warnock was just as scathing in his assessment of the Staffordshire-based whistler, although he admitted his side lacked the cutting edge needed in the final third to take away all three points.

He said after the game: "I just thought he was consistent throughout the game - consistently poor. I thought he started off bad and fell away and the applause he got from the fans. I've never heard so much vitriol. I'm not sure he didn't enjoy it really.

"We thought Morrison was pulled back in their box but we've got to take our chances.

"I thought the tackle on Junior Hoilett was horrendous. I heard he got the ball but I've been told that if there's a follow through and it overly endangered a player it should be a yellow card. That's what I was told and you can't tell me that didn't endanger him by going through him.

"I thought they were playing opposites at one stage. It was a goal kick and he gives a corner kick, there was a corner kick and he gave a goal kick. There was a freekick for them that should have been ours.

"But we just lacked that clinical touch in the final third today, which would have opened the game up but unfortunately it was the kind of game I expected all week really."

Interestingly, Millwall boss Neil Harris was equally critical of Martin in his post-match comments, insisting his side should have been awarded a penalty after Morrison appeared to bring down Lee Gregory inside the area shortly after the restart.

He said: "When you've got 20,000 people in a stadium and the only one who thinks it isn't a penalty is the referee then someone's got to be wrong.

"Unfortunately for us he got it completely wrong. The centre-half Morrison is honest enough to admit that he's pulled him back and clipped his heels.

"It's a foul and it changes the game."

But Warnock was quick to strongly reject any suggestion that Morrison had indeed claimed any guilt for the incident, adding that video replays appear to point to a dive from Gregory.

"I disagree with Neil. Apparently he said about Morrison admitting this that and the other. Morrison said to me that the kid dived and if you watch the video he never touches him and he goes down like a sack of...

"But it's a wonder it wasn't given really because throughout the game I thought theatricals got freekicks throughout the game so we might have got away with one with the linesman."

My View, over all we were awful and hardly created anything.

We did not deserve a win.

As to blaming the Ref, sorry you get some decisions one week and don't the other. Boro away we had all the decisions, thats the way football is, you make your own luck in football. Decisions even out over the season :thumbright: :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

Not for us they don’t we are constantly getting the poor end of the referee pool, I’d say at home this season I’ve seen two refs who’ve let the game flow.

I don’t see what punishment for bad performances these refs get.

As for winning if we weren’t wrestled/ kicked/ etc you never know what the follow on from the flow would have created, and also a resulting free kick but we were denied either.

Millwall set up as Millwall we’re going to tight back 10 and then hoof to wrestle the ball.

We weren’t ready for that we tried our same game plan, with the wrong people on the pitch but I still think we should have taken the 3 largely refused by the shocking reffing

The ref was abysmal, but he was poor for both teams! Warnock got his system wrong today. We should never be playing 3 centre backs at home against the likes of Millwall. We not only got overrun in midfield but Peltier is never a wing back so we were penned back. With three in the middle and two proper wing backs we could have pushed further up the pitch to support our isolated attack.

Ref was bad but had no impact on the result.

He needs to sort the players and the system out, before criticising the referee.

I don't see what the issue is if the ref has done something wrong he is allowed to be criticised surely? No matter what the result I don't see how you can let the ref escape criticism, he added to how poor the game was.

agree that he was poor. but decisions do change games and he made a number of aweful ones. both teams had a decent penalty appeal turned down..and two free kicks were awarded to Millwall late in the game while we attacked down the left which were 100% free kicks to us.

What I mean was like the draw was the fair result so he didn't decide the difference of the result.

The referee was a fecking disgrace !!!

The worst we've had for a while, he was useless for both sides fair enough, but he let them constantly foul which stopped us building memonetum and slowed the game down and kept the crowd quiet. His perform we had a very negative affect for us and reduced our chance of winning IMO. If he had booked a few early on that would have been a very different game.

Worst ref I have ever seen, and I have seen many. The referee assessor must make a report on his performance and he should not be allowed to ref again.
