Can Cardiff City mount a serious challenge for the Championship title?

Cardiff City have made a great start to the Championship season under Neil Warnock. They are currently top of the league after 12 games. We take a look at their squad and whether they are capable of maintaining their great form for the rest of the season-

In goal, Cardiff have Neil Etheridge. He is a Pilipino international who joined from Walsall in the summer. He is a very talented goalkeeper and the Bluebirds have experienced shot stopper Lee Camp as a backup. This shows they have depth in this position.

In the full-back positions, Cardiff have the likes of Lee Peltier, Ashley Richards, Joe Bennett, Callum Paterson and the versatile Greg Halford. Apart from Paterson who is playing his first season in England, these are all experienced Championship defenders. In the centre of defence, the Bluebirds have Sean Morrison, Bruno Ecuele Manga, Sol Bamba and Matthew Connolly to choose from. All of whom are vastly experienced players and good characters to have in the dressing room.

In midfield, Warnock has a huge pool of players to pick from. Craig Bryson, Aron Gunnarson, Joe Ralls, and Loic Damour in the centre and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Liam Feeney, Anthony Pilkington and Lee Tomlin show they have depth in the attacking midfield and wing options.

Up top, Cardiff have goals in them. Kenneth Zohore and Danny Ward have both got goals in them. There is also depth in this position with the likes of Omar Bogle, Frederic Gounongbe and Rhys Healey on the fringes of the first team.

Therefore, I believe Cardiff can push for the title this season. They have a very talented squad and can go under the radar this season. Keeping Zohore and Mendez-Laing fit will certainly help with their push for promotion.

My View under Warnock we have gone a quarter of the season, nobody to fear, outclassed most teams and we are top of the Championship and have a strong squad :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

So I reckon come May 2018, a def Top 4 place, (not even considering scraping in to the top 6) :thumbright: :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

Totally agree...experience, squad strength, carrying no deadwood, harmony and togetherness amongst the players and probably the most experienced management team in the championship (not just Warnock) means I would be amazed if we fall away tamely this season.

Top 2 and automatic promotion is certainly not out of the question.

It's a brilliant start, better than anyone would have predicted especially the way we are playing. Also the bench looks strong with patterson and Harris still to come in.

I still think top 6 would be a great achievement. The top 7 places are still pretty close points wise.

Like the above poster I think top six would be a great achievement. I don't believe we have a chance of an automatic promotion place, but I will stick to my pre- season prediction and say that if things go for us we can just about make the play offs. A long way to go, and I think we will see some big changes at the top between now and May. I don't see us finishing outside of the top ten.

Add the in form Junior Hoilett to that list too.

Any team top at this stage has got to fancy their chances of finishing play offs at least.

We also have the best manager to ever manage in the Championship

out of interest, does anyone know how the teams who have been top after 12 games have gone into finish the season?

Love the opinions but isn't it funny that you know the answer when you read the posters name before even reading what they have said. Do you think this is a football opinion or a reflection of that person? Some half empty some half full.

For example have the glass half empty posters ever predicted promotion? Would love to have seen the posts when we went up out of curiosity :o

Or could it be some of us are realistic and try to look at the league as a whole and not just through blue tinted glasses. I said before a ball was kicked last season that we had no chance of a play off place, and was slated for that, particularly by the fantasists who were confident we were going to get automatic promotion. I have stated from day one of this season that I did not share the bookies views of where we would finish, and that I was confident of a top ten finish, with a play off place a possibility if we get the rub of the green. Will be interesting to look back on this thread at the end of the season.

So our start hasn't changed your mind one bit?

Our start has been brilliant, and I doubt that I am the only member of this forum who is surprised by our start. Unfortunately there are 35 games to play, and there are no prizes for being top in October. I have not changed my mind at all, I still believe a play off place is a possibility, and would be a tremendous achievement given our finances at this time. Just my opinion, I hope I am proved wrong but I do not see us playing Premiership football next season.

No I think Wolves will run away with it. I also think Villa will come strong. Top 6 is definitely doable though and I think 3rd or 4th is very achievable.

I bloody hope we can go all the way! I bet on us late as I am not a gambler but had a tenner at 14/1 for us to win the league, you won’t get those oddds now and I hope not again! I bet a few on here have made a similar or much better bet! :ayatollah: :occasion5:

That seems likely but fingers crossed we can hang on and fight it out for top spot! It is by no means impossible! :ayatollah:

I'm sure I seen a double City to win the league and Zohore to be top goal scorer.
Zohore will go through a patch of scoring I believe so it looks decent with ridiculous odds.

The city to win the league was initially 25/1 I think.

Re: ' Cardiff City Serious? '

i think we'll run out of steam from february onwards, partly because of our high tempo playing style, but also the competition who have much greater resources to strengthen if necessary in january, and depth. that doesnt mean we won't finish 8th or above, but i also think the lack of depth up front particularly will take its toll.

to say we are pretty much guaranteed top 4 is premature to say the least. look at the table, there are 7/8 clubs snapping at our heels. anything 6th or above is still an outstanding season.

Re: ' Cardiff City Serious? '

Before a ball was kicked, I predicted a top 8 finish and with a fair wind and a decent start, a possible play-off place. If we don't achieve a top 6 finish after our blistering start, yes I will be disappointed. Automatic promotion is possible but with three quarters of the season still to play and with some very strong teams on our tail, I wouldn't put any money on it. Just enjoy the ride.

Therefore, I believe Cardiff can push for the title this season. They have a very talented squad and can go under the radar this season. Keeping Zohore and Mendez-Laing fit will certainly help with their push for promotion.

greater resources..?
we have Warnock as our main resource and the current exchange rate seems to be one great Warnock pound = 10.3 nuno spriteandfanta pounds.
quite seriously i think the backing NW was given over the summer has been massively over looked.
we could have had 20 mill for Zohore,Morrison and Bennett. had we sold then bought 20 mills worth of gambles {which all transfers are } we would be viewed as favs and...big spenders..

Totally agree, we may have only spend a few million but when you look at what we kept and new contracts we gave out we have invested pretty big in the playing squad.
