" Cardiff City player that was paid off and Released "

Mon Oct 02, 2017 1:32 pm

Ricky Lambert who was paid off and released this season from Cardiff City has retired from football.

What a waste of £millions and signing an injured player, I hope we finally learnt from this as there was money just thrown away.

Rickie Lambert: Ex-England, Southampton, Liverpool, West Brom & Cardiff striker retires - BBC Sport

Monday 2nd Oct 2017

"Playing and scoring for England is probably my proudest professional moment and I will look back at every aspect of how I got there with fond memories."

His club career started at Blackpool and included spells at Macclesfield Town, Stockport County, Rochdale and Bristol Rovers.

Having spent his early career in in the lower leagues, Lambert realised his ambition of playing in the Premier League, at the age of 30 for Southampton.

Lambert's form for the Saints earned a call-up to the England squad and he scored the winner on his international debut in a 3-2 win over Scotland in 2013.

Definitely a panic buy. But he passed a medical, so it's tough to argue without hindsight. His best years were definitely behind but 99% of fans were chuffed to get him at the time. I understand his wages were around £25k which granted is huge. But I was guilty of thinking he would do a job for us. Hard to argue your point now with hindsight though, waste of money! :|

signing players always has an element of risk. with regards to lambert, if the player is over 30/31 you should only give them a year (unless its a goalkeeper). you need to keep your discipline as there is nothing worse than being stuck with a player who has declined to the point of picking up a wage but not being good enough. we haven't learnt from this though. we have just given bamba a 3 year deal. yes he's playing well at the moment but things change over the course of a 3 year deal. he'll be 35 by the time he sees out his deal.

it's common sense really. something the people running the club lack.

Thomas, the funny story is he never passed the medical, we took him on as injured player, which shocked me, even Warnock made the comments when he took over that Lambert's injuries were not going to get any better.

Whilst his signing was a bit suspect so can't disagree he was a waste of money, generally signing any player carries risks Barca just signed player for multi millions and lost him for 4 months at least! Anyway NW as made up for wasting £££s on Lambert so Time to move on again. :o

Well if he didn't have a medical then I take back what I say...panic buy and not worth the risk. Should've got a loan in instead

I don't know the circumstances of him being released and paid off but if he was paid off it's abit of a cheek really! Fair enough you might be laid off to go and play for another club and even at a lower level but not paid off then retire! Thanks for nothing! The right thing to do knowing that u ere not going to play anymore football would be to retire and go without a payoff! Not screw us!

One of our worst buys for years.

It really was weird how they bought a player who had not played properly for two years? ?

I think he was looking around for a club and we didn't really pay out much as he only had a few months left on his deal so we'd pay to the end of his contract (about £200k-£250k I would've thought). He almost went off on loan from us until the end of his contract but failed a medical. So it's cheaper for us to pay him off than keep him at the club!

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and undoubtedly Rickie Lambert was a poor signing (possibly the poorest even when ACorn is taken into consideration) due to his age and his known injuries before and during his time here. That's not rocket science to work out for anyone!

Once here, most got behind him initially and wanted (more in hope than any sense of reality) him to get fit and become the resounding success he had been in earlier years. But is didn't happen and the club were left with an expensive bill to wipe the extravagant Golden Goose egg off its face!

It was a shame but the club must have considered it one worth taking (even with the evidence they had) and I'm guessing the club were as disappointed as any of us!

We've moved on, Rickie has moved on and the club are prospering under the guidance of a real manager who is not afraid to shake the proverbial tree and tell the hierarchy exactly how it is. Long may that continue! :ayatollah:

As for Rickie Lambert? Personally, I wish him all the very best for his future and genuinely hope he enjoys his retirement after a highly successful career. He can afford it now; largely thanks to Cardiff City FC who boosted his Pension Fund by some considerable margin with little gain from their outlay!

Good luck, Rickie Lambert and move on Cardiff City FC! :thumbright: :ayatollah:

I never disagree with you Chris, but on this I do.

Rickie Lamber had been injured for nearly two yrs, never passed a medical, arrived injured and had only scored 3 goals in the last three years, complete madness to sanction Lambert's signing at £25,000 a week, plus signing on fee.

Cost City £millions, yet we are suppose to be skint.

Annis, I was sort of agreeing but trying to see both sides of the situation. Thats' why I said the club (they gambled IMHO) "had to wipe the extravagant Golden Goose egg off their faces!" :thumbright:

As fans, most were prepared to 'wait and see' and we were wrong, whilst those (including you) that were against from the start were proven 100% right!

As I also said, hopefully under the proper manager we now have, that will not happen again and signings to date seems to back that up! :thumbright: :ayatollah:

That still adds up to £1.3m basic plus other disbursements like insurances, medical covers, etc. (obviously not bonuses) over this 11 months or so and I am reliably told that his contract was paid up at an agreed percentage "well below" 100% of what he would have received had he played on for us, so for me that's a real world saving :thumbright: :ayatollah:

I think he was looking around for a club and we didn't really pay out much as he only had a few months left on his deal so we'd pay to the end of his contract (about £200k-£250k I would've thought). He almost went off on loan from us until the end of his contract but failed a medical. So it's cheaper for us to pay him off than keep him at the club!

few months.?

Oh God, look who's back to bicker :laughing6: We released him July. His contract ran until July 1st so 11 months.[/quot

was you that bickered adam...hind sight seems to be the basement word of the day..

I think Thomas just made a mistake.

Lambert will have cost us a lot of money to be paid off as his contract left was worth over a £million.

He was released under mutual consent so we wouldn't have paid out his full contract Annis, it would've been an agreement between the 2 parties much less than his contract

Correct Thomas :thumbright:

Thomas, he could of got half a mill from us instead of over a mill.

A possibility! But I've heard the same as Sven (can never be sure of course), but it's well below what he could've gotten had we terminated his contract so cleaned the mess up as best we could :thumbright:

That still adds up to £1.3m basic plus other disbursements like insurances, medical covers, etc. (obviously not bonuses) over this 11 months or so and I am reliably told that his contract was paid up at an agreed percentage "well below" 100% of what he would have received had he played on for us, so for me that's a real world saving :thumbright: :ayatollah:

I just mentioned above that we released him by mutual consent - which essentially means we have come to an agreement with Lambert - not paid his full contract out :thumbright:

Yep, totally agree and that's how I understand it! :ayatollah:

Cleaned up previous rubbish as best we could so can't complain about how we operate now :ayatollah:
