“ FORMER CARDIFF CITY PLAYER RETIRES “

By Dominic Booth

Former Cardiff City striker Rickie Lambert has announced his retirement from football.

Lambert brings to an end a career that spanned 19 years and nine clubs, with the Bluebirds the last stopping post for the journeyman striker who graduated through the Blackpool academy.

He made 19 appearances for Cardiff in all competitions after arriving on deadline day in August 2016, scoring four goals.

Lambert also won seven England caps and played for Bristol Rovers, Rochdale and Southampton before earning a big move to Liverpool.

He arrived at Cardiff via West Brom but injuries and a lack of match fitness blighted his time in South Wales and he was quickly surpassed by striker Kenneth Zohore in Neil Warnock's plans.

It was thought Lambert would continue playing, having been linked with a host of League One clubs following the mutual termination of his Cardiff contract in June. But he now brings his career to a close.

A statement released by the striker said: "I feel lucky to have been involved in this sport for as long as I have. I have had some ups and downs in my career but to have represented clubs like Southampton, Liverpool and playing for my country in a World Cup were beyond my wildest dreams.

"I would like to thank the fans of all the clubs I have for but especially at Southampton where I enjoyed my best years as a football and had a special relationship with everyone connected to the club."

What a totally bad decision and panic buy he was .

Its money paid out like this that makes our club a laughing stock , I can understand Tans frustrations but now he trusts Warnock I can see him going with transfers in January .

he should have retired in 2016. i dread to think how much we had to pay to get him off the books.

a timely reminder to anyone who advocates giving anything other than 1 year contracts to players over 30/31 (sol bamba). in 2014 lambert was at the world cup for england. 2 years later and he's out of his depth at championship level.

Definitely agree but don't think anyone saw him declining as quickly as he did. 99% of our fans were chuffed when he came in. So all easy to say in hindsight but can't argue your point.

i wasnt chuffed...and had i been on the board id have had huge doubts {regarding injuries }..but the question is..was..and will always be,do you trust the manager.?
i want us to continue trusting managers ..and not as is often suggested have some accountant from the far east block transfers..if the manager proves to be untrustworthy..sack him..

To be fair Lambert didn't have many issues. He picked up a bad one at WBA but recovered and completed his medical with us so why would you have doubts? Think most of these opinions come in hind-sight. I haven't really trusted a manager since Malky until NW came in so it's nice and refreshing. He will make mistakes, everyone does. But he won't fork out on foreign talent and then pay them off a season later.

Again, key word is "hind-sight". Very few Cardiff fans moaned about the signing because no one knew the extent of the injuries he had/would get. I'm not denying it was a poor signing - because it was an awful signing. He DID recover, and we signed him. But he aggravated it (think it was his back). Again, how can you tell that would happen without hind-sight?

no mate..having doubts is not hind sight..had doubts about various things in my life..was correct to have doubts over some things...and over others i was wrong...youre obviously someone who has never doubted anything at all or just dont know the meaning of the word DOUBT.
seems your determined that he recovered despite the fact he didnt play much..and shouting hind sight every 3rd word doesnt change the facts... he hardly played for WBA..hardly played for us... retired.

I'm not denying no one had doubts either! Some people did doubt the transfer, some people didn't! There's ALWAYS a doubt when a 35 year old joins just after an injury. It is fact that he recovered because he played a few games for us but then aggravated the injury and has now had to retire.

I'm saying hind-sight a lot because you've based your whole post on what has already happened. My point being is that AT THE TIME of the transfer, Lambert was fit to play and was scoring goals only a season previous. Most fans I saw were excited by the signing. I 100% agree that NOW, we can totally say he was a bad signing. But at the time of the transfer, there may have been doubts but NO ONE could guarantee that he would get injured and retire at all. Barca have signed a 20 year old kid and he's out for months, do you think they've gone to their owners and kicked off saying it was a panic buy?
