POLICE said no injuries were sustained as fans clashed after Pompey’s 2-1 defeat to Oldham today.

The message came from Detective Superintendent Darren Rawlings, who said on Twitter: ‘Spoke with fellow Supt match commander at Portsmouth. Some disorder and thankfully no police / public injuries.’


It came after a number of Blues fans, who were in the North Stand, made their way on to the pitch in the dying minutes of the game in a bid to confront visiting supporters in the Milton End.

Stewards were quickly on the scene, however, to prevent fans from clashing.

Meanwhile, following the final whistle, fighting between rival fans has been reported outside the ground.

To assist Oldham fans exiting Fratton Park, some were funnelled along the side of the pitch by stewards so they would come to no harm.

This is the moment Portsmouth fans tried to storm the Oldham Athletic fans - after apparently becoming frustrated at a bare-chested Latics fan chanting songs for his team.

Footage taken by an Oldham fan shows dozens of Pompey fans being restrained by stewards as they run on to the pitch towards the Oldham end.

They are held back and eventually forced back into the stand at Fratton Park.

The trouble flared just after Oldham went 2-nil up in a game they won 2-1.

One witness said it was sparked by a Portsmouth supporter taking exception at an Oldham supporter who had removed his shirt and was singing and gesturing for other Latics supporters to join in.

She said the Oldham fan always removes his shirt and even the stewards were enjoying his songs before it turned sour.

The fan added: “One old man in the Portsmouth side didn’t like this too much and was signalling him to sit down.

“He did as Oldham was 2-0 up and this rarely happens.

“This guy must of been 55-60 signalling to the young Oldham fan to come outside for a fight. This made the Oldham end sing even louder to support the young lad that was being targeted.”

But she said when four more Oldham fans removed their shirts, the Portsmouth fans went berserk and ran towards the away end.

She said at the end of the match the Oldham fans were locked in the ground for safety and the home fans gathered outside throwing rocks and coins.

The fan added that Portsmouth fans were making stabbing gestures and the Oldham supporters had to be escorted across the pitchside to another exit for safety reasons.

She said: “I cannot fault the stewards and the people who worked there who were extremely apologetic for what happened.”

Attendance: 17,848 (486 away fans)

486 Oldham hans travelled 560 mile rd trip to Portsmouth.
