' PASSING GAME? '

Wed Sep 27, 2017 8:27 am

Interesting so far this season on passing stats we are 24th in all of them except one and that is passing in last 3rd of field where we are 1st! Leeds game showed precisely why we will be up near top at end of season? We create more chances than the opposition despite less possession in all our games so far.

We're effective with our passes, that's all that matters.

The only stat I will ever look at is the league table. That is the only one that counts. Stats count as nothing and mean nothing. You can have a shot at goal that hits the corner flag but the stat counts it as a shot. Useless.

Putting the ball in the back of the net and getting as many points as possible is the only stat that counts!

It's a great stat. Leeds do play a possession-based passing game. But I'd like to see the stats of where their passes were going. Most were between their 'keeper and centre halves. All well and good employing a sweeper keeper to keep your play flowing but actually most of the time they did it to avoid our pressing game. Leeds offered nothing in the final third and that's where it all counts?

Its been a feature of city's games especially at Home in way we restrict opponents having shots on target! I only put this out as people like to use stats and generally its negative concerning us? Ultimately its tbe end results that matter and in that respect i believe we will be top end league come may.

And last night on Sky they said, with 700 passes into the final third, we have eclipsed every other team in the Championship. Likewise we have had comfortably more shots than any other club.

Not a negative stat at all! Only stat that really matters is the league table at the end of the day :thumbright:

I remember Pep Quardiola used to get angry when people called his style "tiki taka", as he said every pass counted for something, it wasn't for the sake of it. In the championship you have sides like Fulham, Wolves, Villa, etc. who pass A LOT but it's all in their own half and it's side ways and backwards. It's pointless in this division.

Ps as a sideline Celtic best in Europe for possession over 70%! Its to be expected in mickey mouse league where teams just defend to stop them scoring so leaving possession to them. :o

Tika Taka or a possession based game is great against undisciplined teams or if you are Barca and have four or five genuinely world class players and a once in a generation freak god of a footballer.

But, it’s been sussed by defensive gurus though. We must work endlessly on our defensive structure. We employed a different defensive scheme against Wednesday than we did against Leeds. With Wednesday one player shot out of his position and chased his player down and another player took his place in the shape, we stayed in shape though. Against Leeds Bryson and Demour chased everything down and Sol stayed central in front of the back 4 and the back 4 rarely got in front of their wing forwards. We stop the opposition that want to build up at source.

How do you stop us playing ? We don’t have a play maker similar to Whitts in our last promotion season (stop Whitts stop Cardiff). We don’t have that type of passer. We get the ball to the front and especially the flanks quickly and we beat their man, man on man. So the opposition have to win all their own personal battles. You need to stop us stealing your ball in the middle of the park and breaking. I think a mirror image of us is the worse type of team for us to play, like Preston. They out fought and out run us and stopped us getting the ball to the forwards.

We are probably not that good, but in the rock, paper, scissors of the championship, there appears to be a lot of scissors who pretentiously want to play the “right way” against our basic rock.

Let it roll

Only attended 2 league games and despite the stats I truly believe we play fantastic football on times in the games I been too, long balls over the top even become effective for us where under Slade and that the long balls were aimless.

I get a little bit frustrated with the long balls. Most of the time they don't pull off. Morrison always hits a long one forward to no one or passes it back to Etheridge. Bamba probably the best centre half we have to hoof. With the pace we've got on the wing, it sometimes pulls off.

But I agree, we do play good football now at times. The closest we've had to good football since Dave Jones (slate him all you want but the guy had us going brilliantly in attack). As mentioned above, we've actually made the most passes in the final third - where it counts most.

Let all these teams think they are Barcelona it plays right into our hands, they pass, pass, pass with no threat, we press them into a mistake and our pace and power blows them away. We play at the right times and in the right areas, passing across your back four doesn't score you goals.

Exactly what happened against Leeds and Villa (main 2 teams I can think who tried the passing game)
