A forum for all things Cardiff City

Quite a few years ago I tried to figure out who were the top 10 European club sides based on success, history and the magic associated with their name. To this day, they are the same 10.
In no particular order:
Real Madrid
Barcelona
Juventus
AC Milan
Inter Milan
Bayern Munich
Ajax
Benfica
Man Utd
Liverpool
Not all of them have been successful in more recent times, such as Benfica and Ajax but this is where the "magic" of the name can elevate a club to another level.
There are teams such as A. Madrid, Dortmund, Porto, Sevilla and even Chelsea who may have claims to sit at the top table but for me the top 10 are almost set in stone.
I'm sure others will have different opinions on this and it would be good to hear them.

Interesting post. There are many famous European club sides, many of whom turn up in the Europa League these days. I've been following football since the late 60s, and some names that come to mind are;
Feyenoord
Anderlecht
Red Star Belgrade, (although that won't please some on here!)
Several German and Italian clubs, not in your list,
A couple of Greek clubs
Some that don't really exist in their old form, like Lokomotiv Leipzig
Celtic and Rangers have both won major European trophies
Not forgetting Dukla Prague, of course
That's just off the top of my head.

Not forgetting Sporting Lisbon of course, especially as we knocked them out of the ECWC when they were holders ! From the dim and distant past there was also Moscow Dynamo and Ferencvaros, who were very famous at the time.
I think longevity is also key to making the list and for those you mentioned and indeed the 3 I listed above, their "magic" has dwindled over the last 30 or 40 years. Still "names" of course but hardly stellar.

Hmmm - I had a very similar conversation to this not to long ago...
It's a fair list but Porto should be there instead of Benfica for me.
Whilst I get why you've included them - their domestic dominance across the 60's and 70s is incredible (from 60 through to 77 they won fourteen titles - thank you google) Porto have had a similar level of dominance from the mid 80s through to the very recent past (20 titles from '85 through to 2012)
But more importantly if you're looking at European success then Porto's 2 European Cup/Champions league and 2 Europa/UEFA cup titles plus a couple of intercontinental cups and a European Super Cup outweighs Benfica's two European Cups.
For the record Sporting are actually way behind both in terms of domestic and European titles.
Other than that don't think you can argue with any of the others

Any list will only include teams from the big 4 leagues in future plus PSG possibly. Teams from the Netherlands or Portugal simply won't be able to compete at that level. Not enough TV revenue.

Maybe Millwall at a push heh heh
Only my opinion of course but I would categorise the top 3 London teams in the 2nd tier of clubs based on their European success, history and the magic of their name. Although Chelsea for instance had been successful in the lesser European cup competitions, it is only in the Abramovich era that they have made some impact. Spurs and Arsenal less so.
