Everton striker Wayne Rooney has been charged with drink-driving, after being arrested on early Friday morning.

England's all-time record scorer was stopped by police near his home in Cheshire, in Wilmslow, driving a black VW Beetle.

Mirror Sport exclusively revealed Rooney was arrested, shortly after 2am, and has now been charged with driving whilst over the prescribed limit, Cheshire Police have confirmed.

Rooney who announced his international retirement last week after 53 goals for his country in 119 appearances, spent the evening at a bar in Alderley Edge, believed to be The Bubble Room.

A fellow customer, Shropshire cricketer Jack McIver, posted a picture of himself with the 31-year-old at the venue on social media at 10pm.

Seems to be real problem among footballers with so many being caught. The UK needs to hand out tougher punishments for this. Personally would ban anyone caught drink driving from driving for life.

He was the same risk to innocent people pedestrians and other road users yet the punishment he gets won't affect him like joe public chaffeuer driven for twelve months and pocket money fine to him make him do community service or something similar
