Why Neil Warnock is the perfect man to nurture Cardiff City's homegrown ace Cameron Coxe

Coxe became the latest academy graduate to star for the first team when he played against Burton

Thursday 24th August 2017

Amidst the lethargic 2-1 defeat to Burton Albion in Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup clash, one debutant broke through the general slumber, cutting an energised and enthusiastic figure.

Warnock handed starts to several fringe-players, daring them to give him a selection headache ahead of Saturday’s match with Queens Park Rangers.

Though few were able to pick up the gauntlet thrown down by Warnock, City young-gun Cameron Coxe did so, earning himself the Man of the Match award and introducing himself to the City faithful.

The right-back impressed in his defensive and attacking duties, putting in a solid shift in his first competitive match.

Neil Warnock paid compliment to the academy graduate, stating how it “was a pleasing debut”, even if “he got done second half by Sean Scanell”.

Part of Wales’ laudable achievements in the Toulon Tournament – a competition from which Rob Page's young guns emerged undefeated – the youngster is beginning to mature into a competent full-back.

Despite his frequent international honours at youth level, making a first start for the Bluebirds will have been the highlight of his career, and he was rightly pleased.

“I’m over the moon with it, it was a great experience," said Coxe.

“It was a great feeling to put the shirt on and play in a first full competitive match for the first time.”

Coxe also revealed that Warnock, who overhauled the academy system last season, reasoned his decision to afford the 18-year-old a first start because he “had done well in pre-season games and thought he would give me a chance”.

The youngster started against Taff's Well, where he put in a comfortable and assured performance, providing a glimpse at a possibly bright future.

Did Warnock offer any advice?

“Not really. To just play as I normally do and just go out and enjoy it," added the youngster.

Coxe appears grounded, realising he still has a lot of work to do before he develops into a senior player and under the sage council of Warnock, there is no better place to train your craft and become a reliable and consistent player.

Personally, I thought he showed promise and made some good runs on Tuesday. Being fleeced once or twice by Burton's Sean Scannell (I'd have him here!) is no embarrassment for a youngster finding his way into professional football and will only serve to make him a better player if he listens to the wisest manager and coaching team he has encountered to date!

I wish him well and hope to see another of 'our own' develop  :ayatollah:

I have lost all faith in the club with regards to youth players. Seen so many come through, get a few games then leave.

I thought he was poor to be honest I know he is only 18 but you can usually see at that age if the player has something special and I did not see it in him. At the level we are now the youngster must be better to get more of a chance I still can not think of one player we have released who has gone onto do anything at all of any note .
I would like to see the next Ledley , Ramsey , Gunter, Collins , Earnshaw all who made great impressions before they were 18 but we don't seem to have the talent locally at the moment

A good performance IMO and almost capped his debut with a goal.
I hope NW keeps him in and around the squad and we get to see more.

Not sure how the club do the scouting but there's always been players in the valleys and I've wondered how some of them have never been picked up.

i thought he was very poor defensively, got done. cost us a goal.
But im not knocking a young kid, he's just not ready for first team. he needs a loan or U23's for a season.

Take Bale out of the equation who have we missed out on in the last 20 years from South Wales that we really think would have been a major player for us If we could think of 10 players in that time I would be surprised I not sure South Wales is a hot bed of talent

What I mean is that I've played against see several players over the years in Rhymney & Cardiff leagues who are very good.
I understand its a huge step but I believe some of these players with the right coaching could become very talented.

I'm not aware of any players in my area apart from about 4 or 5 ( ramsey being one ) that have had the opportunity.

I thought he had a very good debut and what if he got done on a couple of occasions by Sean Scannell, so what, it's not like that has happened to far more experienced players than Cameron. As for costing us a goal in my opinion that is so unfair because in the build up to that 2nd goal both O'Keefe and Halford were both beaten far to easily and neither exactly broke sweat trying to get back behind the ball.

Cameron did well and never gave up for the full 90 minutes and with a bit of luck could have scored. Looked like the best home grown right back since Gunter in my opinion.

Understand your point and having a lad who was in the academy it is a huge step up when you think Cardiff had 7 players in he team for Wales who beat England 4-0 in the victory shield some 6 years ago and where are they now

No way was he MOM and was frankly awful in his defensive duties and his final ball was totally piss poor.

However, we all learn from our mistakes and as long as the boy takes on board the experienced he gained he could yet come through, it's up to him to work hard and listen to the old heads.

He did a few decent things yet he also looked suspect defensively. Hard to judge him as he's still so young and was playing in a makeshift team with an appalling midfield in front of him. Let's hope he can progress and be a first team option but I think a loan move would be best right now.

I thought he did well. Valuable experience for him but also difficult in a game where it was clear that a cup run was not desired.
