Bristol Rovers formed in 1883 as the
Black Arabs and elected to the Football League in 1920
In 1952/53 they were
Division 3 (South) winners and in 1888/89 they won theGloucestershire Cup
Bristol City formed in 1894 as
Bristol South End and changed their name to Bristol City on adopting professionalism three years later
In 1907 they finished
runners-up in Football League Division One (their highest ever final position) and in 1909 they lost the
FA Cup final to Manchester United, their only final to date
Bristol Rovers ertainly not bigger than their local rivals, as much as I'd like them to be - my grandad played for them. In reality Bristol City are actually not too dissimilar to Cardiff City and you can see where the rivalry would have started
