Sparkling in pre-season but the big question was: could Mendez-Laing translate that form into competitive matches?
Although he wasn't chosen to start, the answer was a resounding 'yes', with the former Rochdale winger making a huge difference on the right wing in the final 25 minutes.
Before he came on, Cardiff lacked an 'out' ball and were narrow in attack. Mendez-Laing challenged Burton's wily full-back Stephen Warnock and opened up more space for Zohore and company. He can't be too far away from the first team either.
