Why I subbed off Lee Tomlin:

Neil Warnock explains the crucial changes he made to secure Cardiff City win at Burton Albion

The Cardiff City boss wasn't afraid to change things with the game at the Pirelli Stadium drifting towards a stalemate

Sunday 6th August 2017

Neil Warnock has revealed it was a hunch that compelled him to bring Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Loic Damour off the bench to turn around Cardiff City's fortunes at Burton Albion.

The Bluebirds subs made a vital difference as Kenneth Zohore's late strike broke the Brewers' resistance at the Pirelli Stadium in a 1-0 win.

Mendez-Laing marauded down the right flank as Warnock switched to a flat back four, with Damour adding extra dynamism in midfield. The boss then hurried on Danny Ward for the last 10 minutes to give Cardiff more potency in attack.

It certainly paid dividends, even though Lee Tomlin's withdrawal on 65 minutes was a surprise to some. The Bristol City man had impressed on his competitive bow but in the end it was three other debutants whose introductions changed Cardiff's fortunes.

"I felt at half time we had to do a bit more going forward," said Warnock who initially set out his team in a 3-4-3 formation., before a key double-switch on 65 minutes saw Cardiff change shape and lay siege to the Brewers goal.

Damour joined Joe Ralls and Aron Gunnarsson in midfield, while Mendez-Laing proved a thorn in the side of experienced Burton left back Stephen Warnock.

On the battle between Mendez-Laing and Burton full-back Warnock, the Cardiff boss joked that his namesake needed more to worry about in the second half.

"I put Mendez on because I wanted to give Stephen a bit more to do," he added, before revealing the discussions that took place in the Bluebirds dressing room ahead of those vital substitutions.

"We said we would leave it halfway through the (second) half, but I couldn't wait that long," admitted Warnock.

"I tried to be positive with the changes because I wanted to try and win the game. And I thought the changes worked, we were a lot more positive afterwards. First half I think they troubled us but we were very good second half and we deserved it in the end.

"I told them we won't be successful with 11 players, we're going to need 18 or 20 players. We need them all.

"Ain't it nice to have a bench to change a game and try and win a game? We had six on the bench at times last year including kids.

"I wanted to get Mendez and Loic on. It sounds daft but you get feelings about things sometimes and Loic's tenacity would help us further forward; Gunnars and Rallsy had done a good job but they were blowing through their backsides at times so it was logical to try and get some help and pressurise their lads.

"If I could have used four subs I would have brought Wardy on at the same time, but I daren't make all three that early. But it was good to be able to use the subs like that and have an influence."

Well I don't think any of us can question his decisions there.

Having a manager like Warnock is the difference between being an ok team to a good team.
Trollope would never have pulled Tomlin off due to the price tag imo.

Apparently he's not 100 percent match fit so it'll probably take another few 65 and 75 minute game before he's in top top condition

He subbed him because he was having no impact on the game.

Tomlin will have much better days for us for certain. :ayatollah:

Last year NWs hands would have been tied as he didn't have much on the bench
Be interesting to see the starting 11 for the Villa game. I'd imagine he'd revert to 4 at the back but who knows. Exciting times.

I agree with you and yesterday he was able to change the game positively by making the substitutions that he did.

I think that for Villa we may see the back four with Bamba just in front of them that we saw in the home game against Villa last season/
