Stuart O'Keefe to Pompey

Tuesday 01st August 2017

League One club Portsmouth targeting out-of-favour Cardiff midfielder O’Keefe

League Two Champions, Portsmouth are interested in bringing unwanted Cardiff midfielder Stuart O’Keefe to Fratton Park.

The 26 year-old was one of Cardiff’s best performers in the second half 2015/2016 season and had signed a contract extension not long after but has failed to make a way into Neil Warnock’s side.

Portsmout.co.uk say that the South-Coast side have identified Stuart O’Keefe as one of their next possible signings and exploring ways of signing him.

Pompey manager Kenny Jackett is trying to negotiate a move that will see O’Keefe join the club on a season-long loan as he seeks midfield options for the upcoming season.

It is a move that could benefit all parties as Portsmouth could offer to pay the wages of O’Keefe, which would help Cardiff free up the wage bill and could pave the way for another signing.

Another off the wage bill if true, like O'Keefe but it'd he's not gonna play get rid

One of our best midfielders not too long ago, would love him to be given a chance playing regular football with us again but it clearly won't happen so a move to Pompey will suit both parties and should do really well there if true.

Warnock doesn't like him one bit, he bombed him out of Palace to us when he was manager there. The writing was on the wall for O'Keefe as soon as Warnock became our manager.

Best for all concerned if he moved on.

Best of luck to the boy and a very good move for him. Just hope we have a sell on clause, just in case....

Pompey Insider: Combative O’Keefe can fire up Pompey

01/08/17

If you want a proper nasty midfielder who will step on toes, buzz around, dictate play and put in tough tackles, then Stuart O’Keefe fits the bill.

He joined MK Dons on loan from Cardiff for the second half of last season and demonstrated a no-nonsense approach.

In total, he appeared 18 times and scored four goals for Robbie Neilson’s side and was a player who impressed.

O’Keefe arrived at a strange time between the transition from Karl Robinson to Neilson and was one of the first through the door of the January transfer window.

To be honest, he played a role that Dons didn’t really need.

He was very industrious, a sideways sort of midfielder, but the team already had a perfectly good player doing that in Darren Potter.

However, when Potter began to feature less, O’Keefe became the engine room of the side and performed very well.

He is a hard-tackling, energetic guy who chipped in with four goals in his last 12 games and grew into his role in Neilson’s side.

I’d say he was one of those who, if there was the opportunity to sign him, a lot of fans would have taken it.

Certainly, he could have become a favourite over time.

During his loan spell, Neilson was rolling the dice in systems, playing three at the back with five in midfield or two holding or a diamond or the Christmas tree, all sorts.

Yet O’Keefe became very much a mainstay of that team and would definitely do well for Portsmouth at this level in the central two.

He’s a very likeable guy, a good talker and enjoyed his time at Stadium mk as he finally got the opportunity to play games.

During interviews, he was very open about his Cardiff situation and explained Neil Warnock had informed him he was not part of his plans. That is not going to change.

Funnily enough, when he received the call from Cardiff that MK Dons wanted him on loan, he was halfway round the M25 driving back to his Essex home, so had to change his route!

Quite early in the summer, Neilson recruited Ousseynou Cisse from French Ligue 2 side Tours and got Aaron Tshibola on loan from Aston Villa, while Peter Pawlett signed a pre-contract agreement in March.

They represented his midfield strengthening, so Dons didn’t need to go back in for O’Keefe.

In fairness, you could tell he had played in the Championship, he was just that little bit better than most – and I wish him well.

I suppose you've got to trust Warnock on this but personally I like the player and I think he fits the bill as a squad player perfectly for us. I'd even give him a run before Ralls but this was never going to happen.

How much do you think we can get for him from Portsmouth?

I'd pick him ahead of Ralls TBH

The story, if true, is a loan move.

How do you know that if you don't know it's true?

Ex-Crystal Palace and Cardiff City midfielder eyed by Portsmouth
By Mark Ritson

Former Crystal Palace midfielder Stuart O'Keefe could be set for a move to Portsmouth.

The 26-year-old still has two years to run on his current deal at Cardiff City, having initially signed a two-and-a-half year deal in January 2015.

O'Keefe was with Palace for five seasons, having come from Southend United in 2010. He played the majority of the Championship play-off final in 2013, having replaced Kagisho Dikgacoi early on through injury.

He would go on to score his only goal for Palace at the start of their Premier League campaign, a scorcher at Selhurst Park against Sunderland to wrap up three points. In total, he played 51 times for the Eagles in all competitions.

O'Keefe did feature in Palace's second top flight season, before he went out on loan to Blackpool and then joined Cardiff permanently shortly after Alan Pardew's arrival as manager. He spent last season on loan with Milton Keynes Dons.

Portsmouth, who won promotion from League Two, are keen on snapping O'Keefe up on a potential season-long loan.

Tricky one that.
The line that mentions a season long loan might be a clue to even the thickest though.

Hi Chris. I'm not doubting the story, I'm curious as to how the poster above can state that if it's true it will be a loan rather than if true it will PROBABLY be a loan imo
Just curious

That's what you get for not reading the whole article in detail.
No need for name calling though pal.

I like okeefe but it's obviously Warnock doesn't so the sooner he goes the better, along with noone. Getting rid of these two will hopefuly allow us to bring another midfielder into the mix.

I like SO too and think he could do a job but I think there may be some history between them.

I don't mind him, im not bothered if he goes though. If he is as good you would think a championship club would be interested.

It did look that way mate but I'm not a keyboard warrior.
I'd like to see him and Nooone of wage bill asap tbh - particularly if it means we can bring someone in.

Sure, no worries mate.
I think virtually our whole fan base would like to see Noone and a couple of others gone to free up some money for a possible new signing or two.
I'd personally like to see O'keefe stay but I trust Warnock and it wouldn't really bother me like it did with Whitts!
