Former Cardiff and Swansea defender Steven Caulker looks set to join Scottish champions Celtic

Former Cardiff City captain and Swansea City centre-back Steven Caulker is nearing a move to Scottish giants Celtic.

The 25 year-old last played for Queens Park Rangers back in October in a 2-0 defeat to West London rivals Brentford and now looks set for a reunion with Brendan Rodgers.

The Daily Mirror say Rodgers is to offer Caulker an escape route from the Hoops with first team football unlikely under Ian Holloway.

The one-time England centre-back first played in South Wales when he joined Swansea City on loan, where he played a total of 26 times for the Swans, being part of the side that finished 11th in the Premier League in the 2011/2012 season.

Caulker moved to West London from Cardiff City back in 2014 for £8m but has spent a majority of the time away from the club, with loan spells at Southampton and Liverpool.

He did however have a successful return to the Cardiff City Stadium last season, having been on the winning side of a 2-0 victory over Cardiff City for Queens Park Rangers.

In an interview with The Guardian, Caulker revealed that he enjoyed his time in South Wales with Cardiff City.

“I went to Cardiff and, for six months, everything was amazing. I was captain, the manager, Malky Mackay, knew I had some issues but offered to be there for me. I felt wanted, so there was no gambling, no heavy binges.”

Rodgers spoke to The Scotsman on the rumours and said that he spoke to him in a personal sense, describing him as a top player.

“He is unbelievable in both boxes, he is an incredible young footballer but he is suffering. Having had experience in trying to help him previously, I was only too happy to do that.

At this stage there is nothing more than that. He is obviously a QPR player and I was only too happy to speak to him and help him try to shape his life really.”

Both Cardiff City and Swansea City fans will be hoping to see Steven Caulker’s predicament improve having been successful at both South Wales clubs during his time there.
