Wes Houlahan type

Where are these type of players now, the "box to box" midfielders that keep a side ticking over ? Ever since I first saw WH quite a few years ago, I thought that he was exactly what we had been missing and I still have that opinion.

As much as appreciated Whitts skill and class on the ball, we always seemed lacking in that area, even in our promotion year. While I don't advocate industry over skill, there will always be a place for a player with dynamism to keep a side moving forward.

Are you out there Wes Mk 2 ?!

Good post, well the first paragraph anyway!

I think the box to box type midfielder is a dying breed due to modern tactics. One of the best and a typical example was Roy Keane in the first part of his career but, generally, that was before you had dedicated defensive midfielders like you have in most teams nowadays.

I sort of agree with your comment on a dedicated defensive midfielder, so maybe what we should be looking for is someone who is the "hub" in midfield, around which play revolves. However, unlike players like Whitts, McPhail and to a lesser degree Kavanagh, who all possessed good control and passing skills, we need that dynamism that drives a team forward.

You only had to watch the Bournemouth team in their Prem promotion year to see what players like Harry Arter and his ilk can give to a side
