SKY SPORTS LAMBERT TO PLYMOUTH?

Former England international Rickie Lambert has held talks with Plymouth Argyle over a transfer from Cardiff, according to the Plymouth Herald. Lambert has been down to Plymouth and discussed personal terms, but is also due to discus terms with Blackburn Rovers.

Lambert is available for a move but a stumbling block could be his £25,000-a-week wages.

Argyle target Rickie Lambert 'spotted in Plymouth'

By StuartJames | Posted: July 05, 2017

The rumours linking Rickie Lambert with a move to Plymouth Argyle refuse to go away and now, it seems the Cardiff City striker has been in the city for talks with the Pilgrims.

The 35-year-old former England international is said to have been spotted at the Life Centre recently, a scenario similar to when the Pilgrims were in talks with former Leeds and Manchester United man Alan Smith over a move to Home Park.

Although this is purely unsubstantiated rumour, there certainly seems to be some truth in it, with sources close to the Herald telling us he has been down in the Westcountry for talks. And with Argyle tantalisingly leaving the number nine shirt vacant when their squad numbers for 2017/18 were revealed recently theer is every chance of a new striker arriving at Home Park before too long.

Herald columnist Danny Salman feels Argyle are more likely to go for a small, nippy frontman to fill that shirt, but many others believe Lambert fits the profile Adams likes in a striker, especially if he is to persist with his preferred system of playing with a lone frontman.

Adams currently has Ryan Taylor, a good player, but someone who has suffered from injury problems before and who probably can't play 46 league games a season, while Nathan Blissett is unproven at this level and has struggled to have much of an impact since his move from Torquay.

So a third striker of that targetman-type is probably what Adams wants to compliment a squad that is blessed with lots of tricky, quick attacking midfield players.

At 35, Lambert is in the twilight years of his career, but if he can stay fit, there is no doubt he could do a job in League One. Injuries have disrupted his time in south Wales, where he has been told by Neil Warnock he is surplus to requirements.

And therein is perhaps the key to Argyle's hopes of landing a man that is seemingly at the top of their summer transfer wish-list.

Warnock's connections to Argyle – and his fondness for the club – are well documented and if he wants Lambert out of the club, then perhaps a settlement can be reached on his contract, allowing him to become a free agent.

Friend of Argyle: Neil Warnock

That could then see Argyle maybe secure his services on far lower wages than he is on at the moment, with the former Bristol Rovers, Southampton, Liverpool and West Brom frontman believed to command northwards of £20,000.

That is way beyond Argyle's means of course, while there are sure to be other clubs in the Championship and League One that could – and would – be prepared to pay such sums.

Barnet's John Akinde is another player that has been linked with Argyle, but the Bees are sure to want to command a sizeable fee for a man that plundered 26 goals in 48 appearances last season and signed a three-year deal as recently as March to stay at the Hive.

If Argyle were to snare Lambert and he takes a sizeable cut in wages, then they would be acquiring a player that suits their system down to the ground and draws comparisons to other strong frontmen Argyle have had in the past such as Micky Evans and Sean McCarthy.

Is there a picture attached? I heard the bloke who originally reported it admitted it was BS? So not sure what's going on

Can't see Plymouth affording his wages even seeing now that they've bumped up the wages of Graham Carey? Blackburn looks more feasible

I think even if we paid half his wages it still frees up 12.5k p/w to spend elsewhere. Hope this is true.

That's up to him not the club. He's under contract.

Then he should get fit and start playing for us

The bit I liked was how NW has a well known affection for Plymouth, if that's the case then why is he dumping a £25kpw crocked player on them? ;)

Also it appears that the back up striker is also a crock  so untried Nathan Blissett seems to be in for one heck of a season 8-)

No one would argue with your sentiment but Lambert is under contract so we have to pay him whether we like it or not. Unfortunately injuries are an accept part of football and wouldn't allow the club to break the contract with the player.

Could Wotton be key in luring Lambert to Plymouth?

The rumours linking Rickie Lambert with a move to Plymouth have been well-documented, but could current first team coach Paul Wotton hold the key to a successful move?

The pair were team-mates at Southampton together once upon a time. In fact, Wotton was even usurped by Lambert as the Saints’ main penalty taker shortly after the striker’s arrival at St Mary’s.

Could he persuade Lambert to join the Green Army?
