Cardiff City linked with move for Rangers ace Barrie McKay

Sky Sports/Media Wales/BBC/Glasgow Evening Times

Monday 3rd July 2017

Cardiff City have been linked with a move for Rangers winger Barrie McKay.

The 22-year-old recently turned down the offer a contract extension with the Gers and has just 12 months left on his current deal with the Ibrox club.

And according to the Glasgow Evening Times , the Bluebirds are one of two Championship clubs interested in securing the services of the one-cap Scotland international.

Neil Warnock was spotted at Ibrox last week as Rangers beat Luxembourg-based Progres Niederkorn 1-0 in the first leg of their first round Europa League qualifier, although McKay wasn't in the matchday squad for the hosts.

Cardiff's Championship rivals Nottingham Forest are also rumoured to be interested in the winger, who has netted 20 goals in 140 appearances for Rangers.

Forest boss Mark Warburton knows the winger well from his time as manager of the Gers and could prove to be the deciding factor in tempting McKay to move to the City Ground rather than Cardiff City Stadium.

Warnock has already added winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing to his ranks this summer as well as handing fellow widemen Kadeem Harris and Junior Hoilett new deals.

CARDIFF JOIN FOREST IN RACE TO LAND 22-YEAR-OLD SCOTTISH HOTSHOT

Monday 3rd July 2017

Championship side Cardiff City have joined fellow second tier outfit Nottingham Forest in pursuit of Rangers youngster Barrie McKay, according to The Glasgow Evening Times.

The 22-year-old moved to Ibrox as a youth player back in 2011 after being released by fellow Scottish side Kilmarnock, and little over a year later he made his senior debut for the Gers in their 4-0 thrashing of St Johnstone in May 2012.

And he has since gone from strength to strength at the Scottish giants, earning 140 appearances for the club, and in that time scoring 20 goals and laying on 39 assists to help them reclaim their position in the Scottish Premiership.

And with six goals and 11 assists last term for the club, McKay has reportedly attracted interest from clubs south of the border, with Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City reportedly ready to rival Mark Warburton’s Nottingham Forest for the young midfielder’s signature.

Reports last week suggested that the East Midlands outfit were well-placed to land McKay given that he was left out of Pedro Caixinha’s squad for their Europa League clash last week, yet the Bluebirds are also now thought to be expressing an interest in the one-time Scotland international.

Warnock’s men secured a top half finish last season but will be hoping for more next term under the former Sheffield United and Queens Park Rangers boss, who the Bluebirds faithful will be hoping can add an eighth promotion of his managerial career with the club next season.

Former Rangers chief Warburton is likely to hold all the cards in pursuit of McKay, yet Cardiff’s interest has certainly thrown into doubt whether he’ll be moving to the City Ground after all this summer.

I wonder if this deal could involve a swap for Pilks or Noone?

Cardiff City in bidding war with Forest for Rangers star McKay – reports

03/07/17

Championship sides Cardiff City and Nottingham Forest are both in the race for Rangers winger Barrie McKay.

The 22 year-old winger was recently left out of Rangers Europa League qualifier and his future looks to be away from Ibrox.

It is Cardiff who will be competing with Forest for the signature of McKay, who has one-year left on his contract and he will not sign a new deal currently under manager Pedro Caixinha.

McKay was recently told to train with the Rangers U20 squad according to The Daily Mail, alongside first team players like Rob Kiernan, Michael O’Halloran, Harry Forrester, Joe Dodoo and Matt Crooks.

Andy Halliday was also part of the six players that were made to train with the younger Rangers players but has since made a move abroad to Azerbaijani side Qarabag FC.

The Scottish Sun say that Forest have already made a bid for the winger but that it hasn’t met the valuation of the Gers’ £750,000 asking price.

It is expected that Cardiff City and Neil Warnock will come in with a bid for the wide-man this week, with Warnock keen to find a wide-man with the expected departures of Craig Noone, Declan John and Anthony Pilkington.

One thing that may work against Cardiff though in their pursuit of McKay is that Nottingham Forest manager Mark Warburton has already worked with the player already and he could be pursuaded to work under the former Brentford manager again.

Although Warnock will be keen to bring in a winger after his pursuit for Aberdeen winger Jonny Hayes was unsuccessful, with Cardiff hoping that this time they will be more successful in their pursuit of a winger from the Scottish Premier League.

The former Kilmarnock youth has been a part of Rangers since 2011 and played his part in the clubs rise from the Scottish Third Division to the Scottish Premiership.

His individual performances for Rangers saw him nominated into the Scottish Championship PFA Scotland Team of the Year back in the 2015/2016 season.

In Ranger first season in the top flight, McKay played 35 times for the club as he helped Rangers to a third-placed finish and thus qualifying for the Europa League.

Mackay has made over 100 appearances for the Gers, scoring 20 goals in the process. He has also had loan moves to Greenock Morton and Raith Rovers.

The trouble with that philosophy is that you need more than hard work to win promotion

He is a good player. Pace, trickery and a little bit of an edge.

is he one to come straight into the first 11? if not I wonder what's the point when we have Harris, Hoilett, Ward, Laing, Kennedy and at the moment Noone and Pilks.

That's what I was thinking maybe decent swap otherwise

The boys got loads of skill and would be a sensational signing, he's not a blood and thunder type who flies into tackles but his balance and vision are sublime, great close control and a bit of pace. Get him signed.

Seen this guy quite a few times. Would be well pleased if we signed him. Loads of potential and already a decent player.

Can't see us signing him if Forest are after him as Warburton worked with him at Rangers

I would be very surprised to see Noone and Pilks wear a city shirt again, high earners and just don't quite contribute enough.

So 2 wide players going and 1 (faster and more creative) coming in would be a shrewd move. Also Mckay can play multiple attacking positions so that suits the system NW prefers.
