Pitbull sent off

Tue Jun 13, 2017 7:54 pm

I loved having Gary Medel at City but it was so disappointing he never got sent off during his time with us. He obliged tonight playing for Chile away to Romania who scored 2 after his sending off, and won the friendly 3-2.

He may also be on his way back to Boca Juniors.

Video of sending off... a petulant kick after he was fouled.
A bit like Beckham meant to do but bottled out of.

Gary Medel could return to Boca Juniors after seven years. The Chile player was declared transferable by Inter Milan and Daniel Angelici, president of the Xeneize, will go with everything in search of fulfilling an old yearning: to repatriate to the "Pitbull".

In Fox Sports Radio already began to speculate with the signings for the next season, and Sebastián "Pollo" Vignolo slid the name of the formed one in the UC to reinforce the picture of the Ribera.

It is worth remembering that Medel had a successful passage through Boca Juniors during the 2009-2011 season, in which he won the heart of the fans by scoring a 2-0 double against River Plate in the 2010 Clausura in La Bombonera.

Angelici tried once again to count on the services of the "Pitbull", however, at that time Medel chose to emigrate to Cardiff.

He was more like a poodle than a pitbull for us.

Completely agree. Incredible player, especially given for his position and size - hence the deserved nickname. Loved watching him play. I remember when we signed him that the general consensus was that he was going to be a hothead liability but nothing could have been further from the truth. Class act.

Funny how we all see things differently isn't it/

For me he was the a typical mercenary type of player who had a few decent games without ever dominating any match he played in and more or less gave up towards the end of the season when relegation began looking probable.

Strange that on the day that a player who had played hundreds of games for us and scored 98 goals leaves the club some people feel that a player who was here for one season without exactly setting the Premier league on fire is the best player they've ever seen in a City shirt! :o

Oh well - each to their own.

Fantastic footballer for us and loved watching him play.
Oozed class.

He was astonishingly overrated by a fanbase who were desperate to make him into a cult figure. His awful performances often blamed on those around him. I will always remember Hernandez giving him nightmares at the Liberty, looked like a rabbit in headlights. He put in a good performance for you once (Fulham away?) then dined off that for the rest of the season when he quite obviously became a massive liability, especially after Xmas period. He truly was El Poodle, was amazed you didnt lose money on him (in terms of transfer fee at least), could and should have been a lot worse due to his failure in the PL.

(As an aside - I don't think I have ever heard anybody say it was a shame one of their own players never got sent off, that only illustrates my point regarding the fambase desperately wanting him to become a cult figure. Some refused to give up on that notion and have resorted to re-writting history on his abject performances).

You couldn't have watched him during the first half of our Premiership season because he was a different class. Fulham away was just one of several top quality performances he put in. He totally ran the game when we beat you 1-0.

His form dipped when OGS took over, but a Claude Makelele in his prime would have struggled with the way OGS set us up tactically, leaving us open and exposed. He also rushed back from a torn thigh, so wasn't playing anywhere near 100% for the majority of the second half of our season.

He still went on to be one of the stars of the world cup. For you to say he was overrated is absolutely ridiculous.

It is not in the least bit ridiculous, you are doing now what everyone was doing at the time to protect the price tag you paid - taken performances for Chile and attributed them to form for yourselves. I am not saying he is overrated as a player - while limited technically he is quite dogged, effective and commited usually (playing for you and at times this season being an exception).

I am saying his average/abject performances for you were (and still are in some quarters) being overrated in order to create some kind of cult figure out of him. He was terrible for you, for every 1 decent /above average game he would have 4 below average/awful ones with commitment lacking in every aspect. After Xmas this went to almost 100% dismal. He probably had 5 decent games in 30 odd, and helped you to finish bottom on 30 points where at no point in the season did you look like being safe.

According to OPTA, his overall rating from his performances that season was 6.70. To put that into perspective, Leroy Fer (who isnt a guaranteed starter for us) in both his PL seasons with us had an average season rating of 6.85 and 6.84 respectively. Gary Medel being a good signing is a Cardiff created myth.

Oh and when you beat us 1-0 at the CCS he did not "run the show" at all. He was part of a 50:50 scrappy game with very little quality ended up being won by a set piece. I would say our midfield bossed him if anything that day. Yet another Medel myth made up for no reason.

The stats below show every single one of our players outperformed him that day (apart from Taylor and Vorm) as did half your own side...

Someone likes his stats! :sleepy2:

Surprised you managed to watch all of our games that season aswell.

I thought he did a good job for us that year, was better through the first half of the season but so were most of the side before the circus started. Wouldn't say he was the best player I have ever seen play for us though.

Re: Pitbull sent off

Yep I wwtched every single one from memory. When you live abroad you get every single PL game streamed into your home, I often watch 2 matches that interest me simultaneously.

But I am glad most see sense regarding his tenure so kudos to you for that, he just wasn't very good for you. He was Ok at times, decent the odd time and awful the rest. Whittingham was far better that season and amazingly he was blamed a lot of the time when Medel looked like dogshite, far better to keep the myth going and chuck your best player under the bus. The stats rarely lie.

The fact Michu was given a better rating than Medel shows those stats are complete nonsense. Michu had one shot early in the first half, but was then totally anonymous.

An unbiased report in the Guardian awards Gary Medel man of the match: https://www.theguardian.com/football/20 ... ansea-city

I think you should actually watch games instead of looking at stats which don't give an accurate reflection.

I watch the games, make the judgement and then refer to the stats when presenting my findings.

Medel was anonymous.

How many times did you watch him play?... We were on TV in the prem just a small handful of times. Meaning you watch us live or stream our games. Tbh I've found your posts more bearable lately so I'm not trying to insult you but either way your obsession with us really knows no bounds and I do find it quite bizarre.

Its not an obsession, it is a rivalry.

I watched every single Cardiff game that season. Every Premier League game is available on Fox, live. I am not saying anything controversial, lets be honest. Medel was poor to average, he was the center of a midfield that was continually annihilated and helped a team finish bottom on 30 points, with a goalkeeper being their player of the season.

On a side note, I rewatched the derby defeat the other day and I didnt give him enough credit. He did have a decent game in fairness. But it was the best of a bad bunch, it was an awful game.

difficult for Medel in our team. Was presumably bought to break -up play. However, as Whitts didn't step-up that season, had to be more of a playmaker too. Impossible job for him to excel in both roles. Fantastic player :ayatollah:
